In short: Sub-AMP , is a suburban amp, usually with more emphasis on the massage aspect, more inconspicuous and less predictable as service. I'll let "the experts" chime in with details or point to previous posts. There is a lot of info if you read more in this forum.

The most notable difference between AMPs & SubAMPs is services offered & pricing structure.

In an AMP, the client purchases time, the base rate + an appropriate gratuity for the masseuse. What happens during that time is between the masseuse & client. The treatment options available are varied and numerous, with some masseuses offering highly-specialized treatment options. These specializations are frequently of a much higher quality than SubAMPs. However, the basic massage may not be as good as places which focus on traditional massage techniques. Still, there are some practitioners that are very good at both, traditional massage & specialized treatments.

In a SubAMP, the masseuse and client determine the individualized treatment for the designated time. Available options are often, but not always, limited. This specialized treatment usually comes after the traditional massage, when the masseuse can focus on "troubled areas" of tension. Once an individualized treatment plan is determined, the masseuse will offer a suggested tip above the base hourly rate. The client & masseuse then decide which treatments are best, based on availability of options and an appropriate gratuity associated. You may find some of them too costly for the need. Some masseuses discuss gratuities after treatment. Some allow the client to determine the gratuity. In SubAMPs, the focus is usually on traditional massage techniques. And, masseuses may not be as proficient in specialized treatments as AMPs.

As Ashi mentioned, there is a wealth of information available on the AMP Forum, including but not limited to industry-standard gratuities, masseuses and their specializations, and reviews of masseuses and the establishments that offer the best opportunities for clients with discriminating tastes.

Research is the key. Search is your best friend. After you've identified some potential massage professionals, feel free to inquire about specific questions you may have. However, questions like, "Who is the best looking?", or, "Which spa is the best?", are too subjective. Keep it specific.

Be advised that many SubAMPs and their practitioners do not like reviews. You may ask them if a review is appropriate. But, there will likely be signage indicating their desire for privacy.
