The truth is, the entire battle was lost when Ewell, an otherwise competent General, failed to take Cemetary Hill on the first day. With no way to flank the Union line, Lee resorted to a tactic predicated on the Union Soldiers guarding Cemetary Ridge turning tail and running.

Both Brigadere General Armistad and Lt General Longstreet told Lee, "those are Handcocks Men, and Handcocks Men don't run".

They didn't.

I think JD pointed out a significant problem with the fuses on the cannon fire, that if indeed widespread, would have failed to provide adequate cover for Pickett's charge one mile across the valley.
