Back when I was married, I did a lot of duos that varied a lot in their makeup ie. some with two new girls for me, some with two girls who didn't know each other, some with one long time friend (I have an UTR I have seen for 10 years) and her friend, some with two long time friends etc. I did a few trios then too.

For the last 5 years , while single, I have expanded that more as all my girlfriends have been into other girls too. Therefore, essentially all my dates have been duos, trios, or more. I completely agree with afterdark. Put another way, my answer to BBG's original question is "Yes." The girls do need to be genuinely interested in each other, but it works best for me when there's a genuine flow between all three of us. I do want some of the attention, but a couple of times when the interaction between the girls has been mechanical, I haven't enjoyed it as much.
