I'd say to not a question that might be answered in a way you wont like. Women get into this business for as many reasons as there are women in it, just like any other walk of life. If you consider that an escort can clear $100 to $300 an hour after expenses, and set their own hours, it looks pretty good compared to a shift at Walmart, or even at a professional office.

Hmmm. It's a no brainer guys.
For instance, If you loved something and realized you could get paid WELL for it, have more time for school and/or to raise your kids instead of a baby sitter, I think all would agree that this would be everyones choice. This is really a question? The reasons are as varied as the women who participate, and sometimes as weird as some of us guys who do.
The job market, its pay scales and its many other requirements are likely a huge factor.
And wtf with the comment about women getting into the profession because they couldn't get laid in the straight life? Really? How about many of us guys participating? We're paying for it because either we can't get laid because we're old, fat or butt-ugly, don't want the responsibilities of an actual relationship, or are married to women who lost interest for a variety of reasons.

I've actually posed this question more than once. Most of the responses have to do with need for money. However, there is one provider I'm particularly fond of who primarily does it for the sex.
