While I respect your opinion your facts are off. I can guarantee that if you go back far enough in your family tree you will find where some sort of inbreeding has occurred. The mentally challenged argument is exaggerated. Genetically speaking an increase in the chance of genetic defects can occur anytime two people with a family history of the defect have children. Members of the same family will be more likely to have this common history which is why the chance is higher, yet the percentages are low. Based historic populations of countries the Breeding pool would have been relatively small 200-300 years ago compared to the developed world today. This would necessitate marriages between cousins, a practice which is still common place today.

Marriage between the nuclear family was a practice that was frowned upon for religious reasons. This has been expanded to include cousins for various reasons, most of which were based on ignorance.
