Hey Devo, from what I heard, they are willing. The only problem is that damn salary cap.

circling back to OP, I was at the Pirates game last night. It was a beautiful Friday night and they were playing a decent team (Padres) and there couldn't have been more than 3K fans in the stadium. It's pathetic that such a beautiful stadium in a great city with a 'historic' team has been wasting away for nearly 40 years. I'm really surprised that the team hasn't been sold to someone who gives a fuck about baseball. Shit, I'll bet there's someone out there that would buy the team for the rights to the logo alone!
I'm also surprised that the team is still here...or even exists for that matter. My heart breaks for the players and their fans.

Imagine being from Cincinnati-- HOME OF BASEBALL-- Worst record in baseball-- just came off an 11 game losing streak where we were beaten by a margin of 68-20... then we win one game, and have lost another 4 in a row by horrid margins.

Owner made some serious missteps and quotes in the media.. and die hard fans have responded by not showing up to the games.

Circa Mid 70s, one of our businesses suppliers always had free Penguins tickets, so, my dad would take me and another father/kid to see the Penguins play.

Average attendance was about 600, I remember one family, it was an older father and mother, and a mentally challenged daughter, were ALWAYS in the seats in front of ours, always the same free seats you see.

They had to be among the few season ticket holders, and dad and mom, always were reading, knitting, while the kid was the only one actually watching the game and cheering.

The Pens were horrible, and, I can remember one or two times we were there, when a really good team showed up, attendance would break 1,000 and the entire place cheered and went nuts when they announced the attendance.

How pathetic was that, and compared to 3K at the Pirates game, that's about the same percentage of people we have showing up now.

You KNEW the Pens were going to lose most nights, so, you had fun with whatever you could find about it.

A decade later, you couldn't buy a seat if you wanted one, I just don't see that happening here, supposed "Burn it all down, and start over" or not, the Pirates suck, and the owner makes money.

Attendance is going to have to be down to 600 and people start cheering again, if the attendance breaks a thousand, and then maybe, something might change, but, I'm now waiting for it.

... Mate, they got the WORST attendance in the national league.
WORST! ... Miami beach almost as bad. ... Nobody cares.
And the owners MAKE MONEY $$$$ even if the stadium's empty.

Prolly make MORE money with the stadium CLOSED
and they wouldn't have to pay consessions staff.

... For the aged olde-time Pirates fans and supporters,
they must view this as a bleedin' EMBARRASSMENT!

Devo -

I remember the Penguins sucking (wasn't a hockey fan until the late 80's but there were some lean times in the mid 90's too). I had a 16 game season ticket package, last row of section F (the seats they added up near the dome) and it was like $350 a seat for those 16 games. If you waited until after the 1st intermission, you could always sneak closer to the ice. I think they wanted the TV presence to look like there were more people in the stands than actual attendance!

PNC park always has like 40-60% attendance for the visiting team. The cheers when the opposition makes a good play is usually the same if not more than when the pirates make a good play...well, when they make a good play lol
I know Nutting is making money but nobody in PGH knows why he wouldn't want to make more money if he just put a little bit of effort into it. I also don't understand why the MLB doesn't try to intervene. Do you think Bettman would let the Penguins suck for 30 years?

The stadium could be completely empty and Nutting would still make money
Cheap is cheap no matter what the spin

Hey Devo & Yinzer, I too remember those days when the Civic Arena was und half of capacity. The irony of it was a Pirates game was 60-75% of capacity. Reading Grace's comment, she could have been describing today's Pirates.

Since my initial post...the Redlegs have lost every game. Currently sitting at a sterling record of 3-19. Our only hope is if they call up a few players from the California Penal League.

.... Blimey! Didn't know that the Reds were THAT bad off.

They need me Aussie mate Pete Rose back as their manager!

For years a friend had Company season tickets front row along the first base side. I wouldn’t go do to Nutting.

Penguins and Steelers spend to the cap since I can remember.

On the Penguins, I’ll guess we are heading for a few miss the playoff years like between the Mario and Sid era. I’m fine with it at least they spend and try to win.

Red legs sounds like a Soviet running team.

You bet they do! (couldn't resist)

Devo-- that's their full name... The Cincinnati Red Legs. They wore red socks before Boston

I’m a lifelong Bucco fan. 2015 was the straw that broke the camel’s back for me. 97 win season and in 2016 we dumped salary. We were probably one quality starting pitcher or one decent power hitter away from being good enough to make the World Series. I don’t buy the garbage that the Pirates organization tries to sell us. They’ve been trading away big league proven talent for unproven prospects for decades. Typically that’s a smart move but the Pirates do that solely to justify not paying legitimate players what they’re owed. MLB is definitely broken and they’re only hurting their own product by not forcing teams to spend money or having a salary cap. Calling Pittsburgh a “small market” is a lie. We have some of the largest fan bases in nfl and nhl. When there is a decent team to root for, attendance is strong. Nutting could easily spend an extra few million a year on player salaries. But we just keep building for the future.
