I graduated High School in 1974. I had a draft card but the draft was done away with 1 or 2 years before.
At the time most guys went to college, joined anything other than being drafted to avoid be drafted by the Army.
If you was drafted in the Army in the early 60’s to early 70’s you typically went straight to Vietnam if drafted.
I had a brother 10 years older than me join the Airforce. If you joined you had to serve four years. He ended up in Thailand.
I had another brother 9 years older than me. He was drafted by the Army and spent a year in Vietnam.
WW11 was completely different. We was directly attacked. My dad quit school joined the Navy and served 4 years, he has 4 battle stars, he was in D-Day.
Vietnam was purely a political war. That is the difference on if you wanted to serve or not.
When 9/11 happened some people served for the same reasons WW11 veterans did.
