In a brain that people love to describe as “awash with chemicals,” one chemical always seems to stand out. Dopamine: the molecule behind all our most sinful behaviors and secret cravings. Dopamine is love. Dopamine is lust. Dopamine is motivation. Dopamine is attention. Dopamine is addiction.

Dopamine is the one neurotransmitter that everyone seems to know about. Dopamine’s big.

So is dopamine your cupcake addiction? Your gambling addiction? Your alcohol or drug addiction? Your sex addiction?

Dopamine is busy! It’s involved in many different important pathways.

Increases in dopamine release occur in response to sex, drugs, and rock and roll!

We’d be remiss if we didn’t touch upon the fact that dopamine signaling is changed during the course of any addiction.

All abused drugs, from alcohol to cocaine to heroin, increase dopamine one way or another, and many people like to describe a spike in dopamine as “motivation” or “pleasure". But that’s not quite all of it.

In addition, dopamine is signaling feedback for predicted rewards. If you, for example, have learned to associate a cue (like a crack pipe) with a hit of crack, you will start getting increases in dopamine in response to the sight of the pipe as your brain predicts the reward. But if you then don’t get your hit, well, dopamine can decrease and that’s not a good feeling.

Also, if you, for example, have learned to associate a beautiful, desirable woman with casual sex, you will start getting increases in dopamine in response to the sight of the woman as your brain predicts the reward. But if you then don’t get your “fix”, well, dopamine can decrease and, again, that’s not a good feeling.

Dopamine isn’t solely addiction or reward, however. In addition, it’s what we call salience. (Salience or “saliency” is related to that of an item – being an inanimate object, a person, etc.) Salience defines the state or quality in which an item stands out with concern to its “neighbors” in our minds – something that commandingly grabs our attention.

Then again, salience is more than attention; it’s a sign of something that needs to be paid attention to, something that manifests. This may be part of dopamine’s role and also a part of its role in many addictions.

But dopamine, in and of itself? It’s not only addiction, reward, or salience. It has far more roles in the brain to play.

For example: dopamine is involved in the frontal cortex in executive functions like attention. In the rest of the body, dopamine is involved in nausea, in kidney function, and in heart function.

If we think that dopamine is motivation, then more must be better, right? Not necessarily! That’s because if dopamine is also “pleasure” or “high,” then too much is far too much of a good thing.

If we think of dopamine as only being about pleasure or only being about attention, we’ll end up with a false idea of some of the problems involving dopamine, like drug or sex addiction, and we’ll end up with artificial ideas of how to fix these problems.

So, the short of it is, in the end dopamine has to do with addiction, whether to cupcakes or cocaine. It has to do with lust and love.

1. If you go BB with any woman, you can (a) be accused of rape and the rape kit will show positive for semen, and the DNA test will show its yours.
2. If you go BB with any woman, swhe can get pregnant, and men have no say as to her keeping the kid, but will have to pay child support.
3. The guy who started this thread had one review, and a the rest are posts about SAB, curious.

For the most part, us guys are aware about the consequences of BB, but there are a few out there who don't know or care.
