Interesting Question
It's a thought provoking question. I keep good records, so I can add my two cents worth to the discussion.
I've been in the hobby for 2-1/2 years and have had 42 "dates" for an average of 1.4 dates per month. It's limited more by caution and by my relationship with SO than by finances. And I carefully read the reviews and only go with women who are very highly rated in lots and lots of reviews. No, negative reviews don't hurt the good providers. One girl handled a negative review so well and with such class that I contacted her, not despite her negative review, but because of it. Ladies, if an obvious asshole gives you a bad review and you handle it without whining, it's actually good advertising.
I have seen 11 different providers. That includes 25 times with my ATF, 3 times with two other women, 2 times with 3 others. All the women I've seen multiple times I would rate as outstanding and would be very glad to see again. Of the women I've seen only once, two more of them were also outstanding and I hope to see them again sooner or later.
So, some 39 out of 42 times I would rate as outstanding. Even the other 3 times weren't bad. But 39 times it's been a really wonderful, fulfilling experience. Maybe the key for me has been to be very selective and to pace myself by limiting my frequency to 1.4 times a month. There's a thread elsewhere on eccie right now about the hobby losing its lustre. I think for me it's all about pacing. I can't imagine hobbying even once a week. There's too much else to do in life.
It wasn't all mind blowing sex. It's about being with a caring, compassionate woman who shares herself. And, yes, she's in it for the money, but I'm okay with that. The numbers say I've spent $5040 per year, somewhat below that of OP's "typical" hobbyist.
Long answer to a short question. What makes them fly above the rest? Caring and compassionate, sharing, as noted above. Beautiful helps, but isn't numero uno. Oh, I always put convo skill at the top of the list. Not just a girl who jabbers away, but one who shares herself, tells me who she is and what is important to her in life.
Sexual skill? Yes, of course that’s important. My ATF is a sexual animal (but also a loving little girl). Another fave can kiss you into next Tuesday. Two very special memories for this old guy (ED and all that) have been on separate occasions with two different girls who just stuffed me inside of themselves when I was just barely stiff enough to take a condom. But they were so good with their hip rhythm or whatever that I quickly got excited. They must have gone to the same provider school. Lots of wonderful memories. Wouldn’t trade them for anything.
