Just to throw out a few clarifications about what appears to have happened. First off when a gun is "live" on a film set, that means it has been loaded with blanks. So when people are discussing the fact that he had a live gun, it meant that there were blanks in the chamber. What appears to have happened is that they were blocking out a scene in which Baldwin's character draws a gun from its holster. He was handed a fire arm that was believed to be cold (not loaded with anything) for the process. When he was blocking out a take, the gun misfired leading to the accident. AFAIK we don't know what the projectile was. This also wasn't the first misfire that happened on set. From the looks of things, the production was not adhering to safety concerns, and playing things way too fast and loose. When this happened, they were literally in the middle of a labor dispute because they wouldn't book a hotel closer to set for the camera crew. The one they were booked to stay in was roughly 60 miles from set, which when paired up with 12 hour days can be a pretty serious safety concern.
