Best hobby phone hands down is a metro pcs !!! Best rates, easy to disconnect and restart again if needed. And no bills in your mailbox.... GOOOOOOOooooooooooo Metro....lol

Walmart was advertising a special recently. Tracfone for $19.95 with free double minutes for ever. I got a $29.95 phone for the same deal. I paid $30 plus $20 for 200 minutes that last until April. I have used 160 minutes so far. No recurring charges, pay for what you use. This is the best deal, especially with the double minutes. I only use this phone when I am hobbying.

For those who use there phones alot walmart smart talk is good its 50 buch for unlimited calls text and web. But if you use it Milder then I say use net ten because it comes with 300 free min.

I am about to go purchase a hobby phone, but I have a question about re-upping. How does one re-up, say a Tracfone purchased at Walmart? where do you pay that?

also, how does Google Voice work?

You buy a card with a code and "re-up" your time on the phone by calling a number and entering the code.

Regarding Walmart's StraightTalk...

If you decide you want to change numbers for the phone, they will insist on having to mail you a new SIM card. I have not figured out a good reason for this, other than collecting an address.

With StraightTalk, when you buy a new card for the next month and call in and get the next month authorized, ANY BALANCE the card had before this is erased. The new service is NOT tacked onto the end of current service. Any remaining current service is erased and the thirty days start again.

As an example, you buy a phone and the $45 unlimited monthly service on Feb 1, 2010. On Feb 20, 2010 you are near your local WalMart and decide to go ahead and buy a card for the next month's service.

IF you activate that card on Feb 20, 2010, the phone service is now good through March 20, 2010 ONLY, not March 30, 2010. You have lost ten days of service.

I BELIEVE you can buy the card for the additional month early but to not lose days, you should wait to activate the additional month until March 1, 2010.

looks like Google Voice is not accepting new sign ups at this time nor is Gizmo, who were acquired by Google since they managed to offer free outgoing calls using Google Voice via their program, Gizmo5.

I guess I was a little late to this party. Nevertheless, I still learned something today!

Every Google Voice subscriber has three active invites they can use . . . some corporate customers have hundreds - if not thousands. You can purchase a valid Google Voice invite from a reputable seller for as little as a dollar (or less) on eBay, I purchased from one seller and received 20 for $5.00 - all were forwarded to friends of mine in this business and all worked beautifully.

Buy a valid invite off eBay or depending on your area and demand (as availability of numbers in that area may be limited), you may be waiting for a long time . . . they narrow your request by IP address to dispense invitations. With AT&T and some other companies, you can buy a rechargeable card. You buy the card, and put some money on it. Then call a number or send a text to transfer the credit to your phone. After that, you can go back to the store, hand the card and some cash. The clerk runs it through the cash register, and your credit is on the phone before you get to the door. No numbers are required after the first purchase.

Walmart and 7-11 both cell the cards, but they're with some third party company. The cards are walmart or 7-11 branded, and make you think you can only recharge them at the same the same store you bought them at. I haven't tried the cards at a different store, but they're both from "fastcard," so they might work.
