Richard Crenna was a last minute replacement for Douglas and did a good job in the role. who could forget the line ..
"God didn't make Rambo .. I DID!"
the list of people who were in talks to take roles in First Blood is very interesting. the movie was in "development Hell" as they say for years before it was made.

Rock Hudson was approached but was soon to undergo heart surgery and had to pass up the chance to work with Stallone. Richard Crenna was quickly hired as a replacement; the role of Trautman became the veteran character actor's most famous role, his performance of which received much critical praise.[4]

here is an alternate ending .. hard to say if this was really how the ending was planned or not? it's nothing new for a movie to have alternate endings so maybe they filmed it hedging their bets? one thing is certain .. there wouldn't have been all those shitty sequels so maybe Trautman shoulda killed him!!
