I've deposited $ into other's accounts AND got my reciept for doing so as well, w/out ID... Really don't think they care who is putting it in so long as its not a check that could potentially bounce and hurt the account owner, its taking $ out that you have to jump through a million hoops for.

Give it back. The good karma is well worth it.

I make cash deposits into another persons account every month, in cash and in check and have never been asked for an ID and I always get a receipt... How else could I prove the deposit was done? BUT...... back on the original topic.. if the OP got a mistaken deposit into his account, you can bet the intended recipient would notice their account was short.. then, if not sooner, the error would be tracked easily.

There is no one right answer here about what happens if you try to make a deposit into an account.
I bank at a bank now that will not accept cash to deposit to ANY account in ANY amount without an ID.
for cash?
I have no idea where the logic here is.
I can deposit a check in my account from a third party and they do not bat an eye.
I pull $210 out of my wallet in twenties and they ask for my ID.

Once they find out about the error, you'll have to give it back or they'll just take it.
if you intentionally move it to another account, withdraw it or attempt to spend it,
you can be charged with theft and go to jail.

Guess you can call me an insider. What everyone else has said is true. Give it back. The will find the error sooner or later. Don't spend the $ b/c they will take the funds out regardless of the balance in your account at that time.
Due to "privacy policy" laws, you have to have a person's account number to deposit to someone's account, typically. Just a name typically won't work (if they are doing what they should be doing). As far as having ID, I would assume it's because of CTRs (currency transaction reporting). All about Patriot Act regs and "trying to fight money laundering". Plus it helps against fraud and helps eliminate "control" situations. I have seen that happen.
