Sorry, but this seems like a really dopey idea.
Giffords spent only 3 terms (6 years) in Congress. She saw on the House Armed Services Committee, but so were a lot of other minor representatives.
Can any of you name another member of the House Armed Services Committee without Googling?
I know that ships have been named after civilian politicians, but they are typically named after Presidents or senior Senators who played significant roles in increasing the size and strength of the Navy.
I don't see how her service in Congress merits naming a ship after her.
So, the suspicion is inescapable that the ship is being named after her because she was the victim of an assassination attempt by a mentally disturbed man.
I think it is bad policy to give honors to people who are merely victims.
You reward heroism in the face of danger, not victimhood.
I also think it should be a requirement by LAW that navy ships can only be named after someone who has been dead at least five years. That will eliminate a lot of this nonsense.

So what ARE the rules for naming ships? I honestly don't know--never raised to the level of importance for me to fully learn them all.
But more pertinent to this discussion, what do the warring factions on here think they SHOULD be?

Frankly I don't give a flying fuck what they name the boats. Just as long as they keep them well stocked and on guard for us.
The rest of this is bullshit... per the whining bullshitters on this board.
If they'd have named a building after Gabby Giffords, they'd be howling at the moon on that, too.
Book it.

Reagan was a victim of a shooting. No heroism on his part. Got out of WWII combat duty because of vision problems , yet how many pictures are there of him wearing glasses? Hmmmmm
Look, like everything else in life it is politics. Nothing more nothing less. Who gives a shit really.

Two Liberty Ships Named After Jewish Labor Leaders Launched in One Week
October 13, 1944
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Oct. 12)
The Liberty ship Morris C. Feinstone, named after the late general secretary of the United Hebrew Trades, was launched here yesterday at the St. John shipyards by Mrs. Florence Feinstone, widow of the Jewish labor leader.
A message from William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor, paid tribute to Mr. Feinstone as “a devoted member of organized labor.” Speakers at the launching ceremonies included M. G. Boyce, president of the Jacksonville central labor union council, William G. Wolpert, secretary of the United Hebrew Trades and delegates from the Jacksonville Jewish community council.
(Earlier this week, a Liberty ship named after Abraham Rosenberg, a former president of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union, was launched at the yards of the New England Shipbuilding Corp. at Portland, Maine.)

The rear deck is suitable for two Seahawk helicopters, and can also support Harrier jump-jets if necessary. Onboard weaponry includes a 57mm Bofors gun, four .50 caliber guns, chaff, missile and torpedo decoy launchers, an 11-missile SeaRAM launcher, 8 Harpoon surface-to-surface missiles, mine detection and towed array sonar units, and a vertical launching system for ASROC-style surface missiles or Evolved Sea Sparrow type missile defenses

SPC Samuel Crockett is certainly among those who are more worthy and deserving.

My guess is that you can wish for a new name in one hand and shit a WhirlyTurd in the other and you will then know which hand will fill up the fastest!
Problem solved!
