Actually, getting to that simple Gold level is vital. Don't have to pay checked baggage fees. You can book exit row sets and others with extra leg room. You get to board early, so you always have overhead space available. You can go to the First Class line at the AA counter. You go in the Priority Access line through screening. These are all important features for me. I think when you've been at the elite level so long, you forget how the "common folk" have to travel.
I've long given up on upgrades, and they are not that important to me if I get an exit row window seat. I get them about once every two years. I have over 50 segment saved up.
