Default Nasal Twang!

Good girl. Right on again: this is a smart woman.

Most singers today have no concept about how to sing. Mouth talking with a music background is not considered to be singing, by those trained in music.

You are a woman who knows a few things. Breath control is the first thing that a singer has to learn. Most spend years learning proper breath control and to learn to sing from the diaphragm and not the throat; later lessons may require someone to stand on the abdomen while the person sings (yes, I had that happen to me). Singing from the throat viewed with disgust by many. I knew as a child that being a professional singer was a career that I did not want. But I was forced to take voice lessons from a professional teacher. I hated participating in any music/singing programs, which seemed so fake. My family was so proud of their boy, when I was on stage - and I hate those times. After years of this, I was finally able to drop it, and all the art stuff, for all the science, math, economics, engineering, and etc. that I could get, and I studied all of it. I had to prepare myself for a job with a decent income, and most artists do not have what I would consider a secure life.

But the experience remains: the twang and glottal shocks that one hears from the untrained voice is insult to a trained ear; but then, a lot of people like this stuff and spend their money for it. Janice Joplin was a trained singer, but gave it up for the type of performances many people pay for. Yet her voice was trained in the classics and she had control of the diaphragm and the larynx giving her a clean controlled voice that became more raspy but controlled after her excessive drinking. Some considered her voice to be damaged, but she still made music.

Anyway, each person has the right to select the type of entertainment that they prefer. I like some of everything, from Opera to Elvis to Willie: my parents hated Elvis with a passion that knew no bounds. They wouldn't even talk about Janice.

I don't know what blue dress you got that DNA off of, or who you wore it for. But don't drag me into your perverted world.

Longer, just take your homophobia elsewhere. We are trying to have a fun discussion of music. You're like the immature bully who can't stand to see others having fun because he is so down on himself. Get some help, or stay in the other threads. You are not amusing here.

Well just to throw out a name that has not been mentioned...and there have been some great ones already.

But in terms of a LIVE performance, which to me, means not just voice quality but also that electric stage presence....lead singer of a band name Garbage (Silly Girl, Thought you were Special, etc.)

Shirley Manson, she just walks on stage and knows that she is about to give the audience a perfomance that will stay in the memory banks for a long time.

Also, and I can't remember her name, but saw her several times live in late 90's
but the female lead for the group The Cranberries. Another gal, like Manson, who
strutted onto to the stage from the very beginning of the show, and knew she would
have the crowd in the palm of her hand.
