3) decline in air travel. Everyone is planning their summer vacations right now. Like the airline industry really needs anymore horror stories to convince families a road trip is the better bet AGAIN this summer. You can bet one group of lawyers were already dining with another group of lawyers the second this hit the wires trying to maneuver the least amount of damage to summer travel ticket sales.

Don't you people watch House of Cards??? Sheesh! Lol

Not to mention this is the last time a plane will ever disappear. No one thought to put gps on planes bc of all the other tracking methods already in use. Now we know better. Sometimes it is only obvious after the fact.

Actually the US sent a boat out.. USS Kidd... & so have other countries to help aid in the search.. There is a LOT we can do...

& who knows. This might not be the last time this sort of thing happens. Obviously these days almost anything is possible even making airplanes disappear out of the sky. You would HOPE someone would take all the necessary precautions to avoid these kinds of disasters but they still do not have any real evidence as to what really happened that day.

I've been following this story on the news & I hope and pray they find the plane and figure out what exactly happened.

I hope you're right, but I'm not as optimistic as you that the mystery will be solved anytime soon, if at all. The authorities and investigators may be able to offer little more than conjecture until the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder (commonly referred to as "black boxes") are found. Remember, it took almost two years to find the "black boxes" from the Rio-Paris Air France flight that crashed into the Atlantic Ocean a few years ago. And we had found some debris and had a pretty good idea of where it went down.

All that seems clear at this time is that the aircraft took a sharp turn to the west and overflew the Malay Peninsula, and that it climbed and descended wildly for unknown reasons. Engine-monitoring satellite pings also continued for several hours, although I understand that it can't be ascertained with 100% certainty at this time that all the pings came from the subject aircraft.

Many people seem to assume that with all the technological advances of recent years, we have some sort of radar net that covers the entire globe. Nothing could be further from the truth. Vast expanses (such as most of the Indian Ocean and other oceans) have little coverage.

Some have speculated that the intention of the pilot(s), or whoever commandeered the airplane, was to fly it to some remote island strip where it could be repurposed as a huge flying bomb and used in a 911-style attack. But where? The only airstrip in that archipelago of islands south of Myanmar remotely capable of handling the landing and takeoff of a Triple 7 is under the control of the Indians. (Good luck with that!) If the pilot tried to double back toward Indonesia, the authorities there would surely have picked it up. Turning the transponder off does not make the aircraft invisible to radar, particularly military radar.

Although the 777, fueled for a Beijing flight, would have had the range to go to someplace like Pakistan, it would have had to make a big detour or overfly Indian airspace. In other words, that almost certainly didn't happen. That's why I think that although anything we can say now is obviously conjecture, I believe the probability is extremely high that the plane is at the bottom of the Indian Ocean.

Pretty slim under any normal set of circumstances. But I think it's important to remember that the airplane climbed to approximately its service ceiling at one point, and apparently for no good reason -- unless the pilot donned an oxygen mask and induced quick hypoxia by dumping the cabin pressurization while maneuvering the aircraft through wild attitude gyrations, thus disorienting and incapacitating all the passengers almost instantly. I could envision circumstances where that may have been done even before the passengers knew that the plane had been hijacked -- especially if the "hijacker" was actually one (or possibly both) of the pilots, which many observers now believe to be the case.

In any event, this is quite a bizarre mystery. Almost nothing can be completely ruled out, and we may not know much more unless the black boxes are found.

One more note: Many people ask why all that voice and flight control data are confined onboard instead of being transmitted continuously and in real-time via satellite. After all, we obviously do have the technology to do that.

As is the case with almost everything else, the reason is money:

http://www.businessweek.com/articles...-planes#r=read

But in the aftermath of all this, I'll be surprised if there aren't renewed calls for the implementation of this type of monitoring.

This sort of thing has substantial national security import for the U.S. and many of our allies. The financial costs of having the U.S. Navy (and other navies) frenetically scouring the Indian Ocean are rather substantial, too.

I'm just saying. Until there is a mass casualty no one in America usually cares what happens in Asia or to Asians. I'm not saying it is right its just what is.

You are correct. America can aide in many ways but ratings wise there isn't much interest in a missing plane on the other side of the earth. Looks like its getting some more attention today anyway since its finally become a threat and not just a missing plane. If it bleeds, it leads.

We won't know until we know...and even then...we won't really know (the truth)!

There...that's my jet lagged input to this conundrum

however, this dodgy character in disguise (below) was spotted by security cameras in the terminal lounge at KL - the authorities are investigating this new lead.

btw, yes that's really at the KL airport...

Or we could let the airline find their own plane and cover the costs incurred.

What is interesting is that with satellites we can see 2500 year old pyramids covered in sediment at the bottom of the Sea of Japan (or where ever it was), but we can't see a metal plane?

I dot know. Shit just sounds fishy (no pun intended) to me. I just think it's bullshit.

Everything points to human intervention. It's almost too obvious that the plane was taken. The question is, why? An uncomfortable thought; what do you do when you can't hijack an American plane...?

That is assuming the plane is intact, and yes that could be spotted if looking in the right place. Finding wreckage of a crash, from a satellite, particularly if under water, not very likely.

Still a big world and the plane if landed could be camouflaged to appear as something else to a satellite if spotted. This seems to be the stuff fiction novels are made of, if landed refueled loaded with pick your favorite evil thing, nerve gas, radioactive material, biohazard, whatever. Place the people back on let go home or fly it into a target of choice and use the people as a human sheild.

Maybe they landed in north Korea? Humm? Turn and turn back in the China Sea, A fully fueled triple 7 would be in range of the US for sure.

I knew I wasn't the only one thinking that this sounds just like the TV show LOST. Here's hoping all turns out well for them.

Just a couple of observations:

But as I mentioned earlier, where could it possibly have landed? The only place where it could conceivably have landed -- and from which it could take off -- on any of the islands between Malaysia and India is a commercial airport under the control of India. A 777 can't exactly sneak in there undetected. Some of the conspiracy theories being touted are quite fanciful.

Maybe they landed in north Korea? Humm? Turn and turn back in the China Sea, A fully fueled triple 7 would be in range of the US for sure.

That's just as fanciful. The aircraft would have had to evade the radars of Vietnam, the Philippines, China, Taiwan, and South Korea. To have had even the slightest chance of getting very far at all, it would have to have flown extremely low, and jet engines suck fuel like there's no tomorrow at low altitudes. Even then, it's virtually certain that it would have been detected long before it could have gotten within 1,000 miles of North Korea, and in any case would have run out of fuel long before that.

dumbest thing i have ever seen posted here. so why is the missing plane the top story every day on cnn and many other news sites? and has been since it happened.

but probably not on faux news.
