For classic, Thessalian heavy cavalry (almost entirely mercenaries) were a major component of the Macedonian army (northern Greece, of which more than 50% were mercenaries) under King Philip (Alexander the Great's dad). At a later time, the occupying governer general of the Roman Empire, Marcus Aurelius, also paid the Macedonian heavy cavalry, to support his troops. Maybe Marcus will stop by and mention what the cavalry was paid with.
