Acknowledging or not acknowledging competitors in either main-stream media, trade journals, private conversation and otherwise is an ambiguous issue and largely depends on the nature of the business and the texture of the market itself. Some markets lend to this, others do not.

Say hooking falls under the umbrella of "entertainment" or some other non-essential service like this. There are a substantial number of market conditions under which an existing entity benefits by belittling and being dismissive of a potential competitor. Dismissiveness, arrogance, rudeness, outright agressiveness, classism, and otherwise appealing to the lowest common denominator seem like inherently negative things, but quite a few entertainers seize on these things to often manipulate niche economies.

Business 303. Recognize the uniqueness of your market and behave accordingly. Not sure what the proper search terms are for this shit either.
