You, and many of the Dems don't get it. Trump was elected to keep up out of wars. There are many examples I posted elsewhere in this forum, of times the DNC and their media cohorts said that President Trump was trying to get us in a war. So far, no new wars.
Some of you folks need a good aromatherapy candle and some Chardonney.

It's not a War at all, it's too narrow in scope. But we'll let Liberals think it's a war. All the military did was wack a known terrorist and all the stupid liberals in America go crazy.

Did Trump shoot down the UKRAINIAN passenger jet in Iran?
Someone is certainly going to makes a case for that.
Or was it Putin?
Or was it JL?

The plane crashed due to mechanical failure.

Hell, the Soviets probably intentionally shot down a Korean passenger jet that strayed into their airspace and you never saw the Koreans calling Russia "the Great Satan."
As to the hostages, they were taken in the U.S. embassy, which is equivalent to taking them on U.S. soil, and what existed of the Iranian government at that point in time after the overthrow of the Shah could have easily released them.
As to murdering top U.S. officials, I'd rather see them knocked off than our young men and women. Maybe that would make us less likely to wage foreign wars.
As to your bigger point, avoiding tit for tat, I agree. Why the fuck are we in Iraq? Trump asked the same question, and that's one of the reasons he was elected. So he needs to extract us from this situation his neoconservative butthead advisers got us into without spilling lives.

On July 3, 1988, the U.S. Navy's USS Vincennes mistook Iran Air Flight 655—a civilian flight—for a warplane. It fired two missiles at the airliner and killed all 290 onboard.
In the aftermath a number of factors turned out to have been at play—one of them was poor interface design.
The Navy captain based his decision to fire on the computer displays of Aegis, the Navy's combat system. It offers three huge screens showing all the planes in the air—but they don't show a flight's speed, range and altitude. An operator must summon that information manually, and it appears on a tiny 12-inch screen. Even then, it doesn't show how fast the plane is gaining or losing altitude.
Further, the Aegis System software reuses tracking numbers in its display, constituting a user interface design flaw. The Aegis software initially assigned on-screen identifier TN4474 to Flight 655. Then just seconds before the Vincennes fired, the Aegis software switched the Flight 655 tracking number to TN4131 and recycled Flight 655's old tracking number of TN4474 to label a fighter jet 110 miles away. When the captain asked for a status on TN4474, he was told it was a fighter and descending.
Had the Vincennes crew been able to see the correct trajectory of Flight 655, they might not have fired.

Please let him think that air travel is dangerous now. And encourage him to dress and act like a Persian when he tries to come back across the border! He snuck in. Now let's see if he can sneak out!

He's up north. North Clarksville.
Day 4 of devastating WWIII! I had to put on a sweater this morning.
Edit: If WWIII is going to be short, it isn't a WW.

Most of the passengers of that plane were Iranians and Canadians. No AMERICANS.

I do not believe so. I believe "TN" might be shorthand for "tracking number"; hence, meaning "tracking numbers" are computer generated for each and every flight detected by the Aegis system -- regardless of whether they are military or civilian flights.
Currently I'm reading a book about the U.S.S. Laffey which had to deal with twenty-two kamikaze attacks in one battle. The author notes that once a Japanese kamikaze plane was within range of the ship's 20MM Oerlikon antiaircraft guns (about one mile), the gun crew had less than 15 seconds to destroy it before it destroyed the ship.
That was in the age of the propeller.
The response time in this age of the jet is significantly shorter; hence, the dependence on computers. The captain of the Vincennes had to make a split second decision to defend his ship, and he had no time to wait until he could see what logo the plane carried. His decision was based on a computer software glitch which transposed the tracking numbers.
I had to look this up. I remembered the incident when it was first mentioned here, but I also remembered the discussion from that time regarding the transponder codes. Initially, there were reports, American of course, that Iran had manipulated the airliner's transponder code to mimic a military aircraft sacrificing the lives of the planes' passengers to paint the U.S. in a bad light. But after reviewing these old ariticles, it's since been determined that the Aegis system was at fault. Had the Vincennes not already been at battle stations engaged in a hostile event, the Navy tech watching the monitors might have detected the glitch.
Regarding the Soviet take down of Korean flight 007 -- there was an American AWACS in the area, and the Soviets were tracking it. At some point, the Soviet trackers lost track of the American AWACS and picked-up the KAL 007. When KAL 007 meandered into restricted airspace, the Soviets thought they were responding to the American AWACS violating their airspace, and they responded with force.
