The system of government we have is a republic. Not only are a republic and a democracy different, they're mutually incompatible.

A democracy is rule by majority. The minority has no protection whatsoever. This is true regardless of whether you're discussing direct or representative democracy. This is why the founding fathers were smart enough to select a republic, protecting individual rights and the tyranny of the majority. A democracy does not place importance on individual rights. It is simply majority rule. A republic, by its nature, is constructed to protect the rights of the minority against the majority.
Your lack of understanding of governmental forms is appalling. You make the same dumb debating points that a high school anarchist makes.

We live in a democracy, idiot. The FORM of government is a republic.

You say that a democracy and a republic are mutually incompatible.

I would point out that you previously pointed out that GERMANY is an example of a socialism and democracy. BUT YET, Germany is actually are republic, isn't it, mope? You can't even keep your story straight.

We live in a representative democracy - as opposed to a theocracy, an autocracy, a monarchy, and oligarchy, etc.

We could have chosen to have a parliamentary system, like England, which is also a representative democracy. But we chose a republic to spread power. But that doesn't make us any less of a democracy, since power still rests in the people.

You seem to think that since we do not follow absolute majority rule (in which 51% of the people can vote to piss in the cornflakes of the other 49%) that we are not a democracy. That's idiotic. You are thinking of an absolute, direct democracy, which doesn't exist anywhere in the world.

The Bill of Rights also limits the power of government by preventing the majority from imposing its absolute will. Does that mean we can't be a democracy because we have a Bill of Rights?

If you chose to respond to this, you must first address your contention that Germany (which is a republic) is a social democracy despite the fact that you ALSO contend that a republic is mutually incompatible with a democracy.

I must? You don't tell me what the fuck, shitbird. I'm the one telling you how it is.

"The United States is, indeed, a republic, not a democracy. Accurately defined, a democracy is a form of government in which the people decide policy matters directly--through town hall meetings or by voting on ballot initiatives and referendums."

Little light reading for you, bonehead.

How you like them oil prices, btw. On the uptick, lookout OPEC is also signaling they've had enough and want to meet with other major exporters to talk about cutting production. They've had enough of the low prices. Told you fuckers.

We didn't start out as a democracy, but we became one, which is why the country is going to hell. Democracy will devolve into tyranny, which is where we are headed.

Gee, is there any reason why you stopped at that sentence and didn't go on to the following:

"By popular usage, however, the word "democracy" come to mean a form of government in which the government derives its power from the people and is accountable to them for the use of that power. In this sense the United States might accurately be called a democracy."

Once again, your intellectual dishonesty is telling.

And, BTW, yes, you MUST go back and explain your contradictory statements regarding Germany, a democracy and a republic .

Otherwise, you are no better than JDBarleycorn refusing to answer in the thread about the Malaysian airliner.

If you want, I can start a thread entitled "Paging WombRaider! Paging WombRaider!"

Now get to it, mope.

JL is looking for trading tips here on ECCIE.

How special!

Somebody tell him a lie, cheat on his handle or try to get him to keep up his end of a bargain!

Then "advise" him how to dispose of his oil contracts.

Does anyone else think we are about to dip into another recession?

We have printed money and piled up debt, but we have not reached a point where we can pay down debt or where the economy grows so fast that the national debt shrinks as a percentage of GDP.

So, there may be nothing to "prime the pump" with if another recession kicks in. Economists have been warning about this.

So, any predictions on what happens next?

If it goes south, how will progressives blame it on Bush instead of Obama?
Just a few observations:

Of course, the little "mini-panic" is now over, but all the uncertainties causing investor angst continue unabated.

But I don't believe that necessarily means that we are close to dipping into a recession. We could be, but recessions have a way of stubbornly refusing to announce their arrival in advance. A couple of generations ago, Professor Samuelson (who wrote the texts used by millions of university students over the last half-century) famously wrote that equity markets had predicted "nine out of the last five" recessions!

As history clearly demonstrates, even the smartest and most credentialed observers are terrible at predicting recessions. We could be heading into one soon, or it may be that the next one will begin two, three, or even four years hence. But we will have one sometime (rarely do we go more than 7-8 years without a recession, and we're already a few months past the 6-year mark of the last one's ending). And the equity market downturn accompanying the next recession won't simply knock 10-12% off an overvalued equity market -- it will slaughter it, likely taking it down 30-40%, or possibly even more.

Investors should always be prepared for bear markets, especially at times like these when valuations are so high. In my view, most people have no idea how much fragility and instability there is in the world's financial systems. Astonishingly, that includes many finance journalists.

For savvy players, there should be no shortage of juicy opportunities over the next 5-10 years -- both on the long and short side, and at various times and under continually changing sets of conditions.
