Yeah right Affirmative Action (AA). The whole purpose of AA was to make sure that the then, and also now, segregated black people get equal opportunity. The blacks were denied of higher education,any kind of state of the art job, etc... So when you give a black person a 50 points for his/her application to a University, you are trying to make sure that the he/she is not denied education because of his/her color.
This is 2012 but black people are discriminated against in job application etc..
Even AA can't offset that.
This country doesn't provide equal opportunities. The NBA case is a fallacy. There are many white guys playing basketball. It just happens that most of the education deprived young kids spend their time playing ball and get a master of it.
I honestly don't believe there is a real Affirmative Action anyways. I wouldn't support it if it is used to place someone in position because of his color.
But since we still are segregated, there seems to be no viable solution except for the pseudo Affirmative Action we have. For heavens sake even hobbying is segregated and you don't need to hobby to live. How much more is the job and education segregated then...
If there was no segregation, then there is no need for Affirmative Action. You may believe in equal opportunity, but there are many who still miss the good old days of the 50's - even the 1800's.

JL, your negative remarks toward blacks are getting a little tiresome. Affirmative Action has helped more than just blacks, it helps women as well as other minorities. However, it did nothing toward aiding my career. I attended a majority white high school and a 99% white university, graduating from both with honors (straight A's), finished top of my class at OCS, Marine Corp base Quantico, VA. I can continue to list several accomplishment in my career where affirmative action played no role. Having lived on a plantation in MS and denied basic right didn't cause me to hate anyone, but it convinced me to achieve.
Your statement of "being blind to the dangers of..." cuts both ways (I've lived it).

I'm delighted you did so well in the Marine Corps without any help from affirmative action. I applaud your service and accomplishments. It is clear you do not need affirmative action - only losers need it. I find it interesting how you reflexively shun the taint from having advanced via affirmative action, but I do not blame you. All men need to feel they advance on their merits, or better yet, the content of their character.
