Crew, I liked your most recent post. Good analysis, but I just disagree on a few minor points.

I doubt that the amendment proposed by King was an innocent case of CYA. I'd say that they are the ones that saw a political opportunity first. But even if not, why would they fail to predict what the Democrats would do? No, I think they knew exactly how the Democrats would respond. The Republican amendment made it a lose/lose situation for the Democrats. The bill would either be tainted or derailed entirely. A majority of Democrats would have to vote to "allow 9/11 money for illegal immigrants" to get rid of the amendment, or allow it to turn the whole bill into an illegal immigrant issue. I'm sure they could hear the TV commercials playing too...

I've never met any of those gentlemen. LOL

Muhammad: His life was 600-ish years after Jesus and a thousand ??? after Buddha. It seems to be documented well enough. It is very likely that he was a real person, but not divine.

Buddha: Nobody is sure what century he lived in. To me, that raises some doubt. It seems likely that he was an historical figure, but not divine.

Jesus: It's possible that he was an historical figure, but not certain. Even if so, he wasn't divine. But you're welcome to provide some proof. The burden of proof is on you.

Why would you compare Jesus to Muhammad and Buddha anyway? Do you think that's a good comparison...apples to apples?

Plus, they can't ALL be divine. There can be only one! LOL Maybe the first one is divine and the rest are Johnny-come-latelys? Or maybe the latest is the greatest? Why do you prefer the middle guy? If you're going to worship a prophet of a strange Middle-East religion then shouldn't you worship the one that was most likely a real person?

Longer, now you are an authority on who I should worship? LOL! You are too much! God, Buddha, Allah, Jesus, Krishna, whoever, or a deity to named later - one or all of them up there love you very much!

Well, this thread has drifted. To keep on topic, Damn the Democrats! Damn the Republicans!

Sure the Republicans were the first to bring up the amendment...but allowing the amendment would not have hurt the democrats. While the right has rabid anti-illegal immigrant factions, there really aren't 'pro-illegal immigration' factions on the left. The left is more agnostic about the issue...and I don't think allowing the amendment would have hurt them.

I really do believe the democrats are better at playing these games...usually the republicans come off as bumbling idiots when they try.

My original point was to be careful not to buy in completely with Weiner's outrage...both sides were playing politics (and if one doesn't agree the democrats were playing more politics with it, I think most would acknowledge the parties were equal in their cynical political use of the issue)...and Weiner tried to come off as the knight in shining armor, saving the people from the nasty republicans.
