Default Amazon Kindle Question

I'm thinking about getting a Kindle for overseas trips. Any experiences?

Does it strain your eyes if you read the Kindle for a long time?

Also, I see that the 3G version is $50 more than the wi-fi version. With the 3G version, do you get free internet (web browsing, email access, etc....) or is it free internet access just to download books?

I appreciate any helpful info. Thanks all!

As I understand it, the difference between 3G & wifi is you can download books when there is no wifi signal. No added features - just broader coverage.

The pages look a lot like a book page. It is not back lit. If it is too dark to read a paper book, you'll need a reading light.

I'd look at the formats it can read. Some can read Word and PDF documents along with their publishers proprietary books.

It's great for reading books. The whole things is that the E ink is like reading real ink. Go for the 3G. It's nice to be able to download anywhere. Also, the battery last very long since you don't have to light a while screen like a computer or iPad.

Actually, for a more professional review the July consumer reports has a comparison and overview.

Also, it does have a web browser, but it's no good unless you're in a jam. Probably not good for EECIE.

Eyestrain is definitely not a problem. Get the 3G model ... There are no usage fees. Use mine daily. No way to effectively browse web etc with current model. They are working on it though.

I have kindle and ipad. I sync them and can use either, depending on whether I need the backlight or not. It beats the heck out of carrying 6 or 7 books in your suitcase or trying to get good English books overseas. I'd recommend the 3G, but beware of roaming charges outside the US. Better to find WiFi overseas.

The new Kindle 3 is out now if you go to the Amazon web site and pre order it they will ship by Aug 27th. There is a way to check email on the kindle I have done it on mine just have to search for the instructions on how to do it since its much easier for me to use my Android to do that lol.

I've had one for about a year. I love it. If you are worried about eye strain you can change the font size. Best to read under flourescent light or sunlight, but I do have some trouble in a dimly lit room. After I download my books I turn off the 3G. That way I can keep a charge for weeks. I am only using it to read books so I have no newspaper, magazine or blog subscriptions. I charge the thing up between novels but I have kept a charge three or four weeks at a time. If you are traveling out of the country I would say download all your books ahead of time then turn the 3G off.
