Yesterday was a momentous day for hundreds of thousands of young aspiring citizens across the country.
After years of congressional inaction on comprehensive immigration reform, a courageous group of American youth—also known as DREAMers—launched a successful campaign to urge President Obama to end his silence on the issue and take action by issuing a policy to temporarily halt the deportation of DREAMers for two years.
Although not a road map to citizenship, President Obama’s decision gives DREAMers real hope that they can one day be citizens of the country they have called home since childhood.
It will allow them to go to work and school and fully contribute to our society, without fear they will be torn away from their families and deported to an unfamiliar land.
Every aspiring citizen and their co-workers, friends and family needs to know how the decision affects them and what they need to do to apply.
That’s why we launched the AFL-CIO DREAM Education Team--and you can be a part of it. Click here now to sign up.
DREAMers have built an historic movement—a movement that is being supported in union halls across the country—to help everyone find the American Dream, where everyone can work and is protected at work.
When you’re a member of the DREAM Education Team, we will call on you and other union members to support these brave young adults who are taking a stand for their future and the future of our country.
With our partners at United We Dream, you’ll support their work to own the dream—educating eligible young people and their families about the new policy to ensure they know their legal rights at the workplace and have a voice on the job after they apply.
