i guess i dont know much about the system except i see people on food stamps eat way better than i do, and mainly drink bottled fiji water bc the tap isnt good enough. i see the benefit cards come out of designer purses...i dont understand the designer purses on welfare bc you supposedly have no money to put in the purse on welfare. im confused about ssi, i thought that was for over 62 population. ssdi is abused to hell just like welfare, but it also has its place as does welfare. for example handicap adults. how is somebody with down syndrome, cerebal palsy, etc going to support themselves as an adult?

If you're not going to limit what one can buy with the $ from public assistance why limit what you can buy with food stamps? As long as the government allows one to purchase Fiji water and higher end/organic groceries it's going to continue to happen.
As for the designer purses: how do you know that those people bought them with their public assictance money? Maybe it was a birthday gift. Or something they bought before they went on public assitance and could afford it. Or a knock-off bought for a fraction of the price.

But not forever. Eventually the money is going to run out. And if everyone and their brother is collecting some type of assistance it's going to run out quicker than free DNA tests on Maury.

i think they should limit what they can buy, the controlled prescriptions and the fiji water. you can buy lobster with food stamps, but not diapers or laundry detergent. the entire system is flawed

But you know what the even sadder part is? I'm sure there's a ton of people who would use their food stamps to buy diapers and laundry detergent and then sell it at the flea market or somewhere for profit.

nikki, heather. thanks for the posts. Can I kiss you both for them.
ya I been in that line in Wegman's. Buy food you would not as its price is too high. Then they buy with food stamps. You pay for your stuff and leave. To see them loading a new high end and price car. dam them slaves have it nice. I rather be free. To bad my tax dollar pays for that. My other posts I was thinking of a guy I know. He has a handicap. And is on the tit(SSI??? or is that SSDI. over 62 is just SS). But guessing he does not play right. Shit they keep holding back on his payment. As they don't like him working as a bar doorman for next to nothing for just something to do. As others that can work eat like kings for doing nothing.
Doove maybe we can agree on this
Lets say you see a provider, and you like her. But showing signs of burn out. She looks for a normal job. So as to just do a few she likes for fun, or to get out of this altogether. you would be happy for her right? even as it may mean you never see again.
jokacz now that is funny. Ya i had to have a close pin on my nose to vote for that lesser evil jack ass. He did a few good things. but he was a rhino, or to say Libby light.

I generally steer clear of all sociopolitical discussions. However....
I'm less inclined to worry about people receiving unnecessary food stamps and cell phones. Yes the system is abused to a great extent but obviously there are people who legitimately need. I used to volunteer in a soup kitchen and ironically those we served didn't have food stamps.
Anyway it's MEDICAID that's killing the local governments and taxpayers. NY state's cost ran 50+ billion last year. A good portion of the property tax paid by homeowners funds Medicaid. I'm currently looking to move and can't find a decent home in my area with less than 15k in yearly property taxes.
Make no mistake, Medicaid isn't something abused by the poor or the middle class. It's universally abused. The rich after retiring will put their assets in a trust to become paper poor and eligible for Medicaid. So if they need to enter a nursing home, their house and assets are protected to pass along to their children. Nursing home costs are staggering. I personally know people who live in Scarsdale, pay 42K in property taxes, and drive a Mercedes on Medicaid.
No judgments though. These people have paid a lot in the system but I have a harder time worrying about free cell phones. Fuck I have two- the good boy phone and the naughty boy phone- maybe the government should pick up one of them.

I wonder what 'civilization' will look like when it all collapses. It will collapse because neither party will do what is needed to change direction. They are only arguing about when we go over the cliff instead of changing directions. Dems pedal to the metal. GOP an inconsequential rate slower.
When it collapsed in Germany in the 30s, they got Hitler. Scarcity returns humanity to the wild. Could get ugly. Teach your young kids how to use weapons, do some subsistence farming, and know how to maintain equipment like small engines. If nothing else, it will give them some hobbies some day.

So the iPhones I see people using in the checkout line at the grocery, while paying with food stamps, were given to them?
I carry a cheap MetroPCS phone that cost $9.95 after rebate. Where do I sign up for the free iPhones?
And I don't agree with food stamps not being used for prepared foods. Them po folk gotta go home and fry that chicken. Think of all the time wasted they could be smoking blunts instead of standing over a hot stove.
The system is definitely effed up...

This is the perfect illustration how misinformation (which could easily be avoided by doing some simple homework) gets around to exacerbate the political divide.

I thought it was too good to be true. Guess they're buying them with their welfare checks, or proceeds from other business activities...

jack is right. its cheaper phones that are given.
the idea of the free cell was a good in nature. But are Gov can fuck up a wet dream. It was for so poor can not afford a land line. Was to be for if need and wanted. But now its used as a draw card to get some on the tit. And then to track. Land of the free ya right
I'm getting tired of voting for the lesser evil.
trynagetlaid when you see the high end cell and food stamps together. They use the free one for trade of prohibited topic. Then that salesman/women uses it as throwaway delivery line. also true and not in the news. WTF
