3/1/12: In a speech before a large crowd in Nashua, New Hampshire, President Barack Obama exhorted Americans to tell Congress to eliminate $4 billion in annual subsidies to big oil companies, who are making record profits on soaring gas prices. The audience booed as Obama talked about the "outrageous" and "inexcusable" tax breaks. Obama had an unambiguous message for every member of Congress: "You can either stand up for the oil companies, or you can stand up for the American people."
Why didn't he eliminate the subsidies back in 2009 when he had a supermajority in both houses? Inexcusable.

Gnadfly, you idiot. Bush stopped him! Bush was there, behind the scenes, and he stopped him. Everyone knows that. It is all Bush's fault.

I'm sorry Mariposa, but the average price of gas only reached $4.11 a gallon for a couple of days in July of 2008. You feel for a fake poster. The price of gas when Obama took office was $1.68 a gallon (national average). Do you think we will ever see that again?

No, not under any president. Deal with it. Start walking. Buy smaller more efficient cars. I still haven't had to fill up my Ford Focus after nearly a week driving. I give a finger to all those idiots who don't like me cruising to the next set of red lights.

Let's all be like Estench and enjoy high gasoline prices. Thank you for being our example.

Get a small car? Why not move closer to your job? I drive a minivan and fill er up every two weeks.

but then again that is control being exerted on the way we live our lives. buying a smaller car, living close to work (school, entertainment, etc) shouldn't have to be a worry for Americans. Our politicians should be going out there way to preserve our life style and not trying to control our choices. Secretary Chu testified just the other day that higher gas prices are not his concern. His goal is to develope new energy sources even if the result is higher gas prices. I say he should be impeached and if his boss (Obama) gave him that assignment then he has to go too.

Blue, thanks for your reasoned responses as well as your explanation.

I do have a question though. You say supply and demand account for 50-60% of the price of oil. Has the demand increased that dramatically in the last few years or has the supply dropped in an attempt to manipulate the price?

As always, dearest CoG, you misquote me, I never said enjoy them, I never said they are a good thing, but I am saying they are inevitable.

There is an argument which says they are not all bad, they change the economics of alternative energy and of enhanced recovery etc., which have a long term impact. But I am not pushing that argument, it is complex and I am not competent and the audience here is too prejudiced to debate it. But it is an argument whcih can be made. But it is surely political suicide to encourage higher prices, even if it is to the longer term benefit of human kind (again, I am not pushing that argument, just saying it is a valid argument which needs to be debated).

You have a new assignement. 10,000 lines of:

'Inevitable is not the same as beneficial'.

Hand them in by tomorrow.

ps my link above I think answers some of the questions about what is pushing up prices.

So, do Americans think they are specially blessed and deserve low prices while the rest of the world has high prices?

I have been finishing a book by Paxman on the British Empire, he is a BBC journalist and it is reasonably fair. The main thing about empires is that it instills overwhelming feelings of superiority amongst its citizens, often times without much cause. This is/was certainly true of Britain. I would hate to draw any analogies, as I despise that instrument of argument.

I read you right, Estench. We are supposed to bend over and take higher gasoline prices rather than do something to bring the prices down. Ergo, enjoy the damn prices. You want to go along with the status quo, I want to change it back to a market driven commodity.

Sorry, but nice try.

obviously I'm not Blue, but the demand has increased dramatically in China alone. As long as we are involved in the world market OPEC and other producers can dial back production and control price. Unfortunately, we cant drill our way to independence without finding other means to supplement our habits. Blue can probably word it better than I can.

No. And milk will never be 50 cents a gallon again either. You may still have to walk 2 miles uphill in the snow to get it though.

Also, I want to know where people were filling up for 1.68 in January 2009 because I sure as hell wasn't :/

nor I ... nonetheless, its easy to forget oil was 24$ a barrel in 2001, then magically climbed to almost 150$ a barrel before 2009.
