CONFRONT CORPORATE POWER: THE MOVEMENT OF THE 99%
Imagine workers and retirees, families fighting foreclosure and the unemployed, students, immigrants and environmentalists joining together to confront the corporate interests of the 1%…and winning.
Today we invite you to join the Movement of the 99% as we confront corporate power together, bringing communities all across the nation to fight for the long-term health and security of our families and the environment. Together, we will take on the abusive corporations—and the executives behind them—that crashed our economy, are subverting workers rights, perverting our democracy and destroying our environment.
Who are we?
We are those workers, families, students, and immigrants who have a vision of a country that can work for all of us.
We believe that there will be no economy or democracy that fully embodies values of community, cooperation, and equality without confronting—and reclaiming—the power that corporations have abused in their single minded drive for short-term profit.
We have the rare opportunity to create a powerful shift in our country. By coming together now across issue, class, race, gender, and geography we can mobilize hundreds of thousands to confront abusive corporate power, build a vision for a new economy, and reclaim our democracy in 2012 and beyond.
Starting now, we ask you to join us to expose, pressure, and challenge the companies most responsible for undermining our democracy, poisoning our environment and widening the gap between rich and poor. We are starting with some of the worst of the worst: Bank of America, Sallie Mae, Wal-Mart, Verizon and Wells Fargo. Our demands are precise and simple: corporations must pay their fair share of taxes, treat workers fairly, provide principal reduction to protect homeowners, pledge to keep money out of the election, and shift investments away from abusive private prisons and fossil fuels and into job creation and renewable energy.
This spring we are calling on people to flood the shareholder meetings of the most destructive corporations in the country. With your help, we will transform meetings usually reserved for discussion of corporate profits into a platform for us to demand that the benefits of doing business in this country be shared by all. And we won’t stop there.
By the time shareholder season is done, with your participation, we’re going to:
Train and mobilize tens of thousands of people;
Put thousands of people face-to-face with corporate decision makers at shareholder meetings;
And, make the imbalance of corporate power one of the top election issues.
Together, we can build a movement powerful enough to create a true democracy and a new economy that puts people first. It’s a “go big or go home” moment. And we say let’s go big together. There is a critical role for each and every one of you to play in this movement to take our country back, whether you are at home, in the streets or in the boardroom. You are invited. You are needed. Join us!
