But just looking farther into the numbers (keeping in mind 2011 season stats not final). But Elways first eight games only involved one defense ranked 20 or lower (san diego 28th ranked defense). Tebow has faced 5 defenses ranked 20 or lower in his 8 starts. Tebow only faced one top 10 defense (2010 chargers 10th ranked defense). Elway faced 3 top 10 defenses (5, 7 and 8th in 1983).
the final records of the 8 teams Elway faced (raiders twice at 12-4, Raiders were the superbowl champs that year as well) was 69-59 for 1983. The final records for Tebow's 3 opponents in 2010 was 23-25. The current record for Tebow's 5 opponents in 2011 is currently is 25-27.
When looked in comparison and the fact defense has been severely weakened in 27 years between these two, there isn't a real comparison.
Tebow's biggest problem is that Denver will never be able to recruit a big time receiver to join the team. Receivers make their bones on catches. When Lloyd was traded, you could here the relief in his voice. He was nice to Tebow, but he knows 3 catches a game for 50 yards isn't going to get him serious receiver money. You don't put yourself at risk without the chance of a big reward, especially with the short careers these guys have. Probably same with running backs, these guys will face 9 man stacked fronts all the time. Nice to get touches, but it will grind them down faster, they might be weary of the risk of getting smashed that hard game in and game out without a downfield threat. So Denver will have to overpay big time (with front end bonuses) to get decent players at all the other skill positions or hope to get a gem in the draft.
