There isn't just one problem. Its surprising we aren’t further up shit creek than we are. Congress lacks the ability, the motivation and the intelligence to work together for the common good. Until they can do that, not much good will come from Congress.

Munch, you got that one right.

TTH, Rick Perry wouldn't appoint the Senators, the Texas Legislature would have to agree on who they would be. As far as the rest of my points in that response, I said there were no really good answers. I wish there were.

David Stockman is hardly a "failed economist" or an "idiot."

In fact, the linked piece in The New York Times is spot on. He's one of the smartest guys around, and one of all too few who have any understanding of the problems we face today. When that piece was first published, I emailed a link to virtually everyone I know with a strong suggestion that they take a reasoned look at it, whether they felt they would be likely to agree or not. I will do the same here in this thread. If you reflexively feel that you might disagree just because the piece was published by The New York Times, or because you have preconceived notions regarding Stockman's history, I will submit that you may at least agree that it offers food for thought and discussion.

Here's another piece I emailed to a number of people on my list earlier this year:

http://reason.com/archives/2011/03/2...olitics-over-e

In my opinion, most policymakers would do well to take a careful look at the views expressed by Stockman and others who hold similar opinions. Then perhaps we could avoid digging an even deeper hole from which we might need virtually a generation to emerge.

But I'm afraid that we'll just see the "triumph of politics" continue unabated.

And yes, as the thread-starter pointed out in the first sentence of his opening post, wrecking the economy has been a manifestly bipartisan endeavor!
