Only about a week to go. The Republicans have put forth serveral options for cutting spending to get us under the debit limit. The Demo's have put forth no plan thus far. Obama has put forth no plan so far. All they (Demo's and Obama) have done thus far is to declare all the Republican plans dead once they hit the Demo controled Senate or even if passed, threaten to veto whatever the Republicans manage to get through. So if we default, who's fault will it really be?

Jdriller, you must be asleep or only listening to right wing hate media. Harry Reid's bill has already been scored by the CBO.

Obama won't put forward a bill as he is following the lessons (the wrong ones, I would argue) of the Clinton health care bill. It doesn't matter what a President proposes unless Congress will pass it. Obviously Biden has had very substantial negotiations with both the Republican and Democratic leadership in the House and the Senate and proposals have been made in those negotiations as to what the administration would accept and not accept. But they don't want to put a "Administration bill" out because it would be irrelevant unless it could pass (and frankly, because it would be proposed by the administration, any proposal in it, good or bad, would automatically be unacceptable to the Republicans.

However, I do think for public relations purposes, and for the purposes of driving polls, he should have put a bill out cutting about $4.5T over 10 years about a week ago, all of the cuts coming from Republican sacred cows. In my opinion, the more often and more loudly he makes the Republicans say "No," the better he looks. He's playing the game as if there can actually be an agreement with the Republicans. I don't think that there can be until the public pressure of a default, it's economic consequences, and public pressure forces them into one. So his negotiation tactics are, in my opinion, based on a false assumption.

The House bill included a balanced budget ammendment ..but the Democrats, led by Obama don't want to ammend the House bill and resolve the debt issue.

Why? Because Obama doesn't really want a balanced budget...He wants to keep America in a continuing cycle of debt and dependence. He can't help himself, he is a socialist !

I do not often quote Ronald Reagan but the following quote is a direct quote from Reagan on September 26, 1987:

"Unfortunately, Congress consistently brings the government to the edge of default before facing its responsibility. This brinkmanship threatens the holders of government bonds and those who rely on Social Security and veterans benefits. Interest markets would skyrocket. Instability would occur in financial markets and the federal deficit would soar. The United States has a special responsibility to itself and the world to meet its obligations. It means we have a well-earned reputation for reliability and credibility -- two things that set us apart in much of the world."

Exclamation National Debt Ceiling

I predict that the National Debt Ceiling will be raised before the August 2nd deadline.

It simply has to be raised and both parties know it in order for this country to stay in business, but both parties are intent on using the issue to further their iqb political agenda.

Personally, I feel that President Obama has more of the interests of the country in his heart, but is being forced to compromise because the Republicans will use anything they can to weaken the President and further their own cause at the expense of the country.

However, just as importantly, we as a country and as individuals must simply learn to live within our means and stop borrowing money like there is no tomorrow.

Great graph, FG! Just look at that 4T dollars that bush spent in eight years. What a pos that bush guy was. Oh look, BO has spent an equal amount in 1/4 the amount of time.

I like the D response, "We are in the mess because the R's spent too much," so it's ok for the D's to spend even more to fix the spending problems of the past. Classic!!!

So the graph is indicating that with Obama from 2009 to 2017 his programs will cost only 1.44 trillion dollars over a 16 year period. That is just total heifer dust.

First off, it's only projected over an 8 year period. You really are in a total fog, aren't ya?

Secondly, if we're only comparing who spent more in their terms as President, it's clearly not a fair comparison, given that a lot can happen not only in the next 2 years, but in the next 6, should Obama be re-elected. The point of the graph, however, is that we are not where we're at because Obama came into office and spent money like a drunken sailor, as is the meme of the right-wing blowhards.

This debt, and even to a large extent the projected deficits for the remainder of his term, pre-date him.

It says Obama 2009 to 2017 including projections. It does not say just what he has spent since he became President. But my math was wrong. 2009 to 2017 is 18 years not 16 years

The graph clearly shows Obama being the biggest spender ! In less than 3 years he added $4 trillion to the debt. It took Bush 8 years to add $4trillion. And the Obama debt doesn't include his Obamacare which we know will add another $1 trillion, minimum.

And Obama's 2011 budget would have added another $10 trillion over the next 10 years ! But thankfully, it was so bad even the Democrats couldn't sign on to it ! It was defeated in the Seante 97 -0.

But the big picture is that both parties are at fault ! That is why the Senate should pass the Cut-Cap-Balance legislation. But the Democrats won't take that bill up ! Why? Because they don't really want to live within out means. They are spending our country into default/bankruptcy.
