Thank you BJ I was looking for that cartoon.

The 2012 notion is based on the idea the Mayans had some super incite no one else has. If so, it didn't do them much good.

Climate is always changing. That's nature. It cycles up and down. You know, like global warming. OMG, we will all melt! How about this winter?

You need to check out a syndicated (on The Premiere Radio Network) late night radio program Coast to coast AM with George Noory it starts at midnight in Dallas and runs until 4AM on KLIF 570 AM in Dallas (check for local times and stations in other markets.)

2012 is just one of a multitude of subjects that attract the attention of the host, his guests, and nutbar callers from across the U.S. As an addendum it used to be hosted by Art Bell who claims to have seen UFOs on more than one occasion.

But it is not only because the Mayan calendar ends on Dec 21, 2012.
Scientist's have predicted the earth will complete a pole shift and will be inline with the sun and the center of the galaxy on this date, an event which happens once every 25000 years.

No one knows what the effect would be and it's possible nothing will happen.

Link to History channel video on 2012. Though a lot of sensationalist stuff, there are some scientific facts as well.

NO.

Morons who have no idea about astronomy and physics have predicted that the Earth will "complete a pole shift."

Other people who know better, but want to sell books or TV shows have taken up the cause.

NOTHING, zero, zip, nada of astronomical significance occurs on December 21, 2012. The "galactic" alignment happens all the times, just not at the same time as the December solstice. The forces involved exerted by the galactic core on the earth is less than a large truck driving from one side of town to the other.

"Pole shift" is nonsense. The earth's axis makes a 25,000 year cycle. Essentially, the earth's axis points to a point in the sky. Over a 25,000 year period, it draws a circle against the stars. It moves 1/25,000 of the distance every year. There are no sudden shifts. Nothing significant happens in 2012. It only "completes a cycle" if you start counting the cycle 25,000 years ago. It's like driving your car around a circular 10 mile track. Nothing of physical significance happens when you get back to the point when you're driving straight North, even though you've "completed a cycle."

The North and South MAGNETIC poles "swap" periodically. There is no shift in the rotation of the Earth, just the magnetic field. There is no physical force that would cause a rapid physical shift of the Earth's rotation. The magnetic reversals occur over a period of thousands of years. If the Earth's magnetic poles shifted over a period of a few months instead of centuries, there would be very few significant effects. There would be slightly higher cancer rates, compasses wouldn't work right, there might be radio and satellite problems. There could be some electrical power outages.

This stuff is well understood. There is NO science in 2012 disaster predictions.

The Mayan calender doesn't end. It's just like having a 100,000 mile odometer on your car. All the numbers go from 99,999 to 00,000. The Mayan calendar has rolled over several times before.

It's no more significant than year 1000 or year 2000 in the current calendar.

Now, it's possible that there's some asteroid out there with "Earth 12/21/2012 or bust" written on it, and we haven't seen it yet. Maybe some star has gone "hypernova" and a gamma ray burst is headed our way and will hit us in 2012. Maybe an evil alien race will attack us on 12/21/2012. Maybe Quetzalcoatl will destroy the world then. Maybe the antichrist will take over.

That's superstition, not science.

Move along, there's nothing to see here.
