How much has trade with China made Americans in the last 3 or 4 decades? Our people and businesses manufacture jets, machinery, medical equipment and high end electronics. We've got labor shortages now. How are we going to become self reliant when Americans don't want to do menial work like stitching clothes and assembling low end electronic items? Open up the floodgates to immigration?

That's what Singapore and Chile did. It worked for them. But yeah, I agree, it makes sense to negotiate terms of trade so that our products have access to foreign markets. And there are areas where we should be more self sufficient. Rare earth elements and certain drugs for example.

Question is how much more would you be willing to pay? $2000 for a basic TV, 4000? !0,000 for a refrigerator? It isn't all about you either, maybe you are a multi millionaire and can buy whatever whenever. The vast majority of Americans can't.

He didn't impose higher tariffs on Mexico, to my knowledge.

The USA and China were both losers from the higher tariffs they imposed on each others products. The winners were countries like Vietnam, where Chinese companies moved production to get around the tariffs. And like Brazil, which started exporting more agricultural products to China. The transportation costs are probably higher from Brazil to China. But when you have to pay a 20% or 30% tariff on U.S. soybeans, it makes more sense for a Chinese importer to buy from Brazil.
