There will come a day when being an illegal in this country will become a very difficult thing, people are charitable when times are good, when times get bad, as they are going to, tribalism will emerge again, and we see it happening already, if only with Trump and Biden signs remaining up long after the election.

One of the first times I saw tribalism, was in the city, we were working at a condominium in East Liberty, the residents were of one faith primarily, and, not Christians.

I was a young teen, still just carrying material, not doing real work, but helping out in the family business, it was a week like this week, 90 percent humidity, 90 degree temperatures, and, whatever water I had was long gone, kids didn't carry coffee in a thermos, convenience stores didn't exist, and, I probably didn't have a dollar in my pocket anyway.

So, I saw a garden hose, and, thought, I can get a drink, well, like it was scripted, the condo owner, a lady came out, and I asked her if I could get a drink of water from her hose.

She replied, "Are you going to pay my water bill?"

I was dumbfounded, I literally had no idea what to say, we had a well, not a good one, and, I had to go and prime it, when it went dry, about once or twice a day, it was one of my chores, in the summer, I seriously had no idea that people had to pay for water.

Further, nothing in my country child mind, had prepared me to have someone say that I couldn't get a drink of water, neighbors and us, still had a hand pumped wells outside our houses, nobody would ever consider denying another human a drink, I mean, it just wasn't even an option anyone would consider, especially if it was hot and they were in danger of heat stroke.

So, at this point, I just stood there, speechless, I didn't have a response to reply to her.

She went back in to her condo, I stood there.

Later, I told my dad what had happened, and asked why she wouldn't let me get a drink out of her hose.

His response was, "Well, they are city people, and, also they are J#*$, you just wouldn't understand.".

And I didn't.

But I do now.
