I saw “nyt” as part of the link and knew better than to open it, so didn’t .
I have learned that if anything is published in the NYT that it is, Fake news!

A) It's an opinion piece and should be taken as such.
B) To disregard everything in the NYT because the editorial board and most of the journalists have left-leaning views would be as silly as disregarding the WSJ because the editorial board and many (not sure if it would be accurate to say most) of the journalists have right-leaning views.

I would highly recommend that people of all (or no) political stripes listen to/read the transcript of the Trevor Noah interview on The Argument podcast. The money quote: "We Live in a World Where Having a Conversation Is Punished".
