Bob Brinker used to talk about that. California believes if you earned the money in California then they had a claim on that same money for taxes no matter where you currently reside.

At the time (late 80s), Brinker talked about the 17 states that did it. They were all reliably blue states.

That seemed to catch on with other states when it came to professional athletes. There are states that demand athletes pay taxes based on your contract being worth X amount of dollars. Say you played only 6 games in that state all year. They want taxes based on whatever 6 games of that contract is worth. I can't imagine the accounting headaches involved with trying to determine tax laws and rates in multiple states.
