There was so many govt failures at so many levels. I think we're going to find he "followed procedure." Other cops arrived at the scene and were disciplined because they weren't called to the scene. Other cops were called to the scene and "stood their ground" as per procedure and weren't disciplined.

The whole situation on how this shooter was treated in school, by the different law enforcement agencies, the local mental health officials, etc is so fucked up I've suggested a "blue ribbon" commission and I'm not a fan of "blue ribbon" commissions.

It is easy to charge Peterson. However, I don't think that's the right thing to do. It sets a very bad precedent. He should have been fired and lost his pension instead of being allowed to retire. He shouldn't be used as a political punching bag only in the end to face no real consequences save his disgrace in society. He will be forever an outcast from society. In this order, pedophiles, rapists, then Scott Peterson are anathemas. The charges he faces, I'm not sure fit, as the linked article explains. Therefore he probably will be found not guilty in court. He'll then live out life with his retirement albeit in disgrace.

I agree with grean. Not so sure cowards need to be locked up. I would not have gone in. One reason I would never be a cop or join the military. We don't all have the balls to put ourselves in a deadly situation.

You never know how you will react to a situation you have never encountered. Lets face it, the vast majority of street cops will never be in an active shooter situation.

I'm not trying to defend this guy but....

There are Rules of Engagement and other procedures cops and servicemen must follow. Failure to follow them could lead to discipline up to and including termination. A state official for one bad day isn't going to "lose their pension." They may get a reduced pension but it won't be taken away.

It ain't 1945 anymore. Unfortunately John Wayne isn't coming over the horizon. Not trying to belittle you, it's just the way things are in today's PC, bureaucratically driven society that has little accountability to the taxpayers and voters.

I'm not a cop and I'm damn sure not a hero.....but if I had been there with a gun or without a gun...I would have run inside that school to do something because schools are full of kids.

Half the men in WW2 were scared stiff in their fox holes. There's a natural human instinct that prevents a man from killing another. Today's armys train that fear out of them. Im sure that's what happened here.

You don't know me...I been in a life or death situation and didn't waver or think twice about my life, just protecting the life of other...that was part of the CCL course and had no problem with the actions I took and was found justified in my actions.
I'm not cavalier with my weapon but didn't and wouldn't hesitate to use deadly force to save the life of myself or others...no second thoughts there. I would give my life in defense of my well being or the well being of others without hesitation.
IF I saw ANYONE confronted with a deadly situation I would never run for that...EVER!!

I have been in a couple of chaotic situations and it never entered my mind NOT to get involved.

It was said a long time ago...this is why they pay us 98.32 dollars a month.

It is a very natural and even harder instinct to overcome. Well over half of WWII soldiers were drafted. They didn't choose to be in that fox hole. Of the 6 million who did enlist and chose to be, I'm certain there was a fair number that had second thoughts as the bullets started hissing next to their ears.

Same thing with vietnam.

They still didn't get a pass, especially when their inability or rather unwillingness to fight caused others to die.

That deputy CHOSE to become a policeman. He had a duty. He failed to perform it. He undoubtedly had training in cover tactics and engaging threats from cover. He just let people die.
