Default What is ignorance?

just like how people keep saying, "ignorance" ie, "there is SO Much ignorance" or, "you are ignorant!!"

are they talking about oxidative phosphorylation? Or super massive blackholes?

what are people "ignorant" of?

everyone is ignorant of something,..you need to define what it is people are ignorant about?

btw, being a big/fat girl is fine for some and not for others
but it def is not conducive for health, if you think it is, you are ignorant of what being healthy means, ie risks of cancer are higher in fat people than leaner people...
you need to define what it is people are ignorant about?

There has been discussions about this with the thought that there is ignorance on a subject when on is totally unaware of a certain subject. So, once we are able to define what people are ignorant of: we are no longer totally ignorant, because we are now aware that the subject exists.

Once we are aware of the subject, we can progress and learn more.

For example, before the microscope, we were not aware of germs - we were totally ignorant of their existence, or the idea that they could exist. Now there is a whole field of study of microbiology.

For example, Benjamin Franklin was a smart man: he discussed in length the question of what was happening when water was heated to make steam. The steam and boiling water were the same temperature: if they were the same temperature how did water convert to steam? He was ignorant of the added heat needed to change from a liquid to a gas. More heat was used to make the change, but the temperatures were the same. He had no way to measure the heat value, only the temperature. The concept of the British Thermal Unit was unknown. Today we use that principal of changing back and forth from a liquid to a gas to pick up heat from one place and reject in another place as the gas changes back to a liquid. It is called air conditioning. Pick up the heat inside and throw it away outside.

The beginning of the end of ignorance about the heat needed to change from a liquid to a gas - and back again - was Benjamin Franklin asking the question about what was happening. In time others understood not only what was happening but why.

So, do we understand the old Ben was a really smart guy who was not afraid of recognizing his own ignorance about what was happening at the boiling point of water. The end of ignorance is asking questions.

I just skipped to the end.
But upon reading the second to last sentence, I made a pot of tea.

Ignorance is the lack of knowledge, education, or awareness. Everyone has some degree of this at one time or another.

Stupidity is having the knowledge, education, or awareness and still making the bad decisions, comments, actions.

I would rather deal with an ignorant individual than a stupid one, they tend to never learn.

Yes, except you have made the definition much broader than I. I believe that every person is ignorant about something, and most of us are ignorant of many things.

As Ben Franklin tried to understand what was happening when a liquid turned to a vapor, he still didn't understand what was happening: he knew that there was something he did not know. Recoginizing his ignorance was the first step to knowledge.

The understanding that liquids with a low boing point could be used for removing heat, such as freon and ammonia, was for others.

We can all keep on learning, or is it "keep on trucking"?
