The men who were appointed into these powerful roles favored women in these proceedings. Just because women weren't given the opportunity to be part of the process in selection it doesn't mean that they were not favored in the final outcome. It's called the patriarchy system, meaning that women were looked upon as objects that should be supported by men. You are looking at it from a feminist (in your case borderline gay) and liberal point of view and not realistically. BTW, most marriages have historically remained intact, divorces were not common, until the late 1960s in which the psychological revolution that challenged the status quo took place throughout the world.
