Marino got a bad rap coming out of Pitt. Was rumored to be running with the wrong people. His future wife's brother was known to dabble in "forbidden topic" that was popular in the 80's. That's why he dropped in the draft. Hugh Green was a Dolphin too. Never lived up to his college days tho. His Pitt counterpart, Rickey Jackson made it to the HOF. Pitt was really good from the mid 70's thru the early 80's. Produced lots of good pros.

Dan Marino is the best qb who never won a superbowl. he could have won several. unfortunately his one appearance came against Joe "4 Rings" Montana. well .. if ya gotta lose, lose to a great one.

Marino's stats were also down his senior year, he was a pre season Heisman candidate as well he should have been. he probably would have declared as a junior if he knew somehow that he'd have a bit of a let down season as a senior.

i'm a Dolphins fan going back to the great early 70's superbowl teams led by Larry Csonka. i still blame the failed WFL for destroying my 70's Dolphins, which helped lead to you Steelheads taking over lol. Miami lost Csonka, Jim Kiick and Warfield. let's see you Steelheads lose Franco, Lynn Swan and Frenchy and see how well you do?

that whole WFL debacle took Miami a decade to get over, until Dan Marino was drafted. A couple interesting anecdotes about Marino. one by Jackie Sherrill his coach at Pitt. Sherrill supposedly asked Marino who is every bit the 6'4" he's listed at, who helped him with his throwing motion? Marino, already tall, had a very high release point on his throws. he had one of the fastest releases in football. Marino told Sherrill that his dad taught him to release the ball like that and Sherrill told him "never change your motion!!" not bad advice. I've met him and Drew Bledsoe who's listed at 6'5" and they stood next to each other at a CMN charity event my company at the time sponsored. they looked every bit as big as they are listed lol.


another from Don Shula. he stated he knew how good Marino was in camp as a rookie but didn't think he was really ready yet. took him 4 games to realize that no matter what, Marino was way better than David Woodley and the rest is history.

Anyway, Marino was also drafted by the Royals as a shortstop. He did have a down year as a senior but the rumors were why he dropped. The great Shula never built a solid running game to help Marino. They were one dimensional and always relied too much on Marino. He beat the Steelers in the AFC championship game in route to his only SB appearance. Montana, another local boy beat him. Marino is still revered in PGH. Montana not so much. Montana wanted $25k to come back to his hometown to celebrate the naming of his HS stadium in his name. What a dick.

Yep, Johnson ran Emmit Smith into the ground to 3 SBs in Dallas. BTW Waco, the Phins got shit canned in SB 6 by the Fagboys.24/3 as I recall. Yeah that was with Greise, Csonka,Warfield and Kiick. One of the worse drubbings in SB history. The Steelers never lost to the Fagboys in the 70's. they also got the best of the Raiders and Oilers who were very good. Make no mistake, despite the Dolphins perfect season, The Steelers were clearly the team of the 70's and one of the best teams ever. They've been a better organization over time also. Once they learned how to win, they never looked back.

My point was Bradshaw isn't stupid per Hollywood Hendersons famous quote. And I wasn't comparing his wealth to anyone else's. But he has done quite well for himself. Staubach was smart enough to build a business empire. Not many ex athletes do that. Most try and fail. Jordan is basically marketing his name thru Nike like Bo Jackson before him and Woods after him. They needed the help of Nike to produce their wealth. Palmer was the original international star. He was involved with starting the sports agency that others used. Palmer owned many business and was a very charitable man. Arnie will always be the King.

While Thomas Henderson never claimed to be a Rhodes Scholar, he was smart enuff (or lucky...whichever) to purchase the right number combinations to win TWO separate lotteries. In 2000, he cashed in a ticket for $28 million....my oh my...

He's come a long ways since those dark days (ie: 2+ years spent in prison; molestation charges, etc). Today, a model citizen and philanthropist, Hollywood is contributing to those in need in his community. I guess the fairy tale ending can come true on occasion....

The season that gets somewhat "lost" on the masses (ie: fans that only show up on Super Sunday) is the Steelers 1976 campaign. I submit this may be one of the best teams in NFL history that did not go on to compete or win a Super Bowl.

Pittsburgh roared into post-season destroying Baltimore in the Divisional Playoffs (but lost both 1,000 yard rushers, Franco & Rocky to injuries). Oakland had an easy time of beating Bradshaw and his crippled offense the following week in the AFC championship (and went on to spank Fran Tarkenton and his Vikes in Super Bowl XI.

76 was unquestionably their best defense. Bradshaw was hurt most of the season so they ran the ball and just shut down the other team. I was at those games. They were simply intimidating. I went to the Baltimore playoff game. Bradshaw was in great form and they destroyed Bert Jones and a very good Colt team down there. Joe Erhman speared Franco when he was on the ground. A cheap shot that broke his ribs. There was a plane that flying around the stadium. We were in the parking lot after the game and the plane came swooping down, flew over the goal posts and crashed into the upper deck which were empty. The pilot survived. The Steelers couldn't beat a great Oakland team on the road in the AFC championship game. They tried a 1 back offense which didn't work out.
