I don't recall the senator's name, but I had heard if from several senior navy brass. I then saw it referenced in "Escape From the Deep", the non-fiction account of the sinking of the Tang off of China in 1944 and the subsequent ordeal of those who escaped(author is Alex Kershaw I believe). I recall the senator is mentioned by name but I may be wrong. A very good read by the way.
