YMMV should never be a factor when that kind of pay is involved. He should show up and be perfect every time as long as the other people on the course have fulfilled their end of the arrangement while he is playing. No excuses.

A little golf education, THN:

No golfer is paid to show up and play. They earn money by how good they finish. If they fail to make the Friday afternoon cut, they go home without a dime. Now some overseas tournaments will offer a popular golfer a ton of cash if they will come and play in their tournament. Tiger, Phil and several others have done this.

The YMMV thing...this sport is more mental than physical and removing demons from your brain (like a woman chasing you down the street with a 9 iron) gets... complicated. Forgetting how to chip and putt wears on you. Doubts about your ability build up to the point you can't take a backswing.

Tiger finishing in the top 20 would be a victory for him. Winning the tournament would be...miraculous.

I'm gonna pull for him. 'Cause us horndogs gotta stick together!

MooneyFlyer nailed it (ie: .....kissing Tiger's ass for everyone's increased bank accounts since he joined the tour). Take a look at a few numbers since Tiger's debut.

Brief History in Time.....Tiger, age 20, turned pro late summer of '96. He won his first major the following spring (The Masters) by 12 strokes. The top 5 places for prize money for that event (in 1997) vs this year's (2015) purse:

1997 2015
1) $486,000 1) $1.62 mil
2) 291,600 2) 972,000
3) 183,600 3) 612,000
4) 129,600 4) 432,000
5) 102,600 5) 360,000

[ Note: Yes, times are different but wrap your brain around this one: at last year's Masters, Lee Westwood finished in 7th place and earned a paycheck of $301,500. Jack Nicklaus won SIX Masters and his combined prize money for those efforts tallied $269,000.]

Moving along: Tiger wins the U.S Open the following year (2000) and earns $800,000. Today's first place check for that event?......staying in line with The Masters: $1.62 million also.

The largest total purse payout on the tour today (of the majors) is the PGA Championship (total payout this year is $10 million with $1.8 mil going to 1st place ). Tiger's first year (again, 1997) total purse was $2.6 million with $460,000 going to the winner.

Would these purses have naturally increased on their own to today's numbers without the renewed interest Tiger brought to the game? I, for one, am skeptical that would have occurred without him.

Since we can't pull a George Bailey and see what things would look like today had Tiger never existed, it's impossible to answer that question. My guess is there are few on the tour today who would scoff at the Tiger-effect on what's being banked today.

...........because Tiger's skill and charisma brought a dying sport back to life, increased interest in the game, and caused purses to skyrocket.....he also paved the way for minorities to break into competitive golf.

Yeah Tiger is sort of a Monger at heart maybe we should be rooting for him, but I don't really give a shit about his crappy golf game I'd rather root for him to nail all the models in the Victoria Secret catalog.

As far as this prize money stuff , since Tiger's game has gone to shit has the prize money gone down? No it's continued to go up . So much for that theory about him being the only reason prize money going up.

The populariy and sponsorship of the Ryder Cup is as high as ever. Tiger plays like shit there every year and now he's not even good enough to make the team. Obviously people aren't tuning in just to watch him.

I'm always interested in other people's thoughts , I'd ask you to give me your prediction of a player to win that had higher odds than Holmes but the first round is almost over so it's a moot point.

I wonder how many people bet on Tom Watson?

Actually another player that had caught my eye that I didn't mention was Charl Schwartzel, his odds were much higher than Holmes (around 80-1), he's a past champion and he was playing pretty well at the end of last year , oh well that's ancient history now.

I like to bet on players or teams that are long shots but have a great potential to be surprise winners. That's more fun and it's the best chance a non-professional has to win at gambling in the long run. That being said it's just for fun

I am pulling for UT alum Jordan Spieth. I think he is among the leaders at the moment.

the leader by 3 shots.. harkening back to another 21 year-old named Woods, who won by 12 shots in 1997..

how many remember that a month later, in his sole Colonial appearance, Tiger was on the verge of winning, then fucked up the last couple of holes... and Fuzzy Zoeller made his infamous remark about Tiger ordering chicken that Masters week .. Tiger never forget either episode, and would play Byron Nelson then skip Colonial every year after..

Personal mistakes aside, like that trophy wife, Tiger was one of the best golfers around. Was.

Stealing Charles Barkley's comments about Michael Jordan trying a comeback, he has two things working against him, time and Tiger Woods.

If Tiger could repair his public image, he could have a teriffic career as a sports commentator.

Shit, Tiger should run for President, the way he can shank a ball, he'd be the greatest President since Gerald Ford.

Spieth was spot on pretty much all day yesterday....a 64, wow....magnificent.

If he's able to duplicate yesterday's score on Friday, this thing might be over once the cut is determined. He's already picked up an additional stroke thru 2 holes today (-9 at this writing).....

Per the "alum" reference, who cares? He's a Former Longhorn (just like Kevin Durant is with his one-year stint at the Forty Acres) and will always be regarded as an Orangeblood. He helped the UT golf team win a National Championship his frosh semester so nuff sed.....

Hook 'em!

Still pulling for Tiger to improve on yesterday's +1 score. It wasn't anything breathtaking (but) you could definitely see he battled all day and there were positive signs come the end of the day. If he can keep his sh** together today and make the cut, that's a win.

Most individuals will take themselves out of an event/tournament if they feel they cannot perform 100% for any reason, because they know they will not make enough/any money nor have the enjoyment of competing at a high level. Providers should cancel/reschedule if they feel or know they are not going to be able to give at least an honest and solid effort to be at their best in a BCD session. Some do, but most will not because it is easy money.
Christ man lighten up.

Care to take that hook and get reeled in any harder.

Speith is going to run away with this event. I say he finishes -18 for the tourney and wins by 3 strokes.

This tournament is still wide open...a 5-shot lead with 36 holes is nothing in the Masters. Greg Norman blew a six-shot lead...on Sunday. Watch out for the three guys at 7 under: Casey, Rose, Johnson.
