I think they put a hold on the card and though they don't charge it, they still 'authorize' funds and I believe that might show up. Just get out the old yellow pages and start calling hotels and ask them if they take cash deposits instead of a credit card..
But most hotels will take gift cards as the credit card. Just tell them you lost your card. You don't even need to register it. Just be sure to load up at least $150 on the card as deposits vary.
This might be playing with fire but if you think this will go on for a few months, you might consider subleting an inexpensive apartment. If you look in the temporary housing section of cl, lots of folks renting out their pad for a few months while they travel. You can always pay your rent with a money order and if you are meeting a couple times a week, it might be way less expensive.
