I saw him play many times at the old Qualcomm (or Jack Murphy) stadium. A consistent and underrated player for 20 years, and a great person. I don't think there is anyone like him today. He will be missed.

Best part from the ESPN article I thought:

"...After spending parts of just two seasons in the minor leagues, he made his big league debut on July 19, 1982. Gwynn had two hits that night, including a double, against the Phillies. After doubling, Pete Rose, who had been trailing the play, said to Gwynn: "Hey, kid, what are you trying to do, catch me in one night?"

There are so many stories on the web I can't find the old Sports Illustrated story. Gwynn had a career average of .338 . The remarkable part is his career average compared to the MLB average during his is something like 60 points higher. They compared that to many other HOF players and he had the highest spread of any of them. If I find the story I will post a link.

I think he was a nice guy also. He blamed his cancer on dipping every day at the ball park. Anyone have any info. on that? Scary stuff if true

It was echoed in the ESPN article about his cancer. Gwynn was an amazingly nice and charismatic guy.

I wish that lockout had never happened, as a kid I was really excited I could see a .400 hitter

Sickening since he batted over .400 from late 2003 until early 2005, more than a full season. For his career he always finished strong and was hitting at a +.400 clip the month of the work stoppage.

As a life long Dodger fan, it was still a thrill to see him come up to bat either at Dodger Stadium or the Murphy when I would travel. He brought class, dignity, and respect to a game. Mr. Padre will be missed.

Morsa Google the Eulogy Vin Scully gave him. Should be on the MLB website. If there was a way my appreciation of Vin Scully could go up it did with that speach.

I am an odd one, I happen to like both the Dodgers and Padres. I just hate the Giants haha.
