That is inspirational to me to see you
Committing to lose weight, and get in shape.
Seeing a doctor first is a a good move.
And just start out slow.

And remember, you don't need to kill yourself for an hour a day every day.
80% of losing weight is diet,
20% is exercise.

And the exercise should be high intensity burst training, not low intensity
Aerobic( I.e...jogging), and you only have to do it for 10-15 minutes ,3
Days a week.

And don't forget to add weight training , again 30 minutes a day, 3
Days a week should be enough.
Overtraining is just as bad and pointless as under training .
I see both at my gym.
You must stress the muscles for them to grow, and
More muscle burns more fat, and you have probably lost some
Muscle over the last 20 years, so you don't burn as any calories during the day
As you did in college , when you could eat anything
You wanted.
But rest is crucial too. Give your body the time to recover and rebuild the muscles back bigger. And you will probably need supplements . It is very difficult to get all the nutrients you need through regular food, particularly if you are eating at a
Reduced caloric level(see the forum
Article on cutting weight).

Cheater, I race guys your age and older all the time that look like Dave. Don't underestimate your ability already.

Honestly though, as a guy that was once 250, now 200 I wouldn't start high intensity as is recommended in this thread. I'd start with weights (light until you have your form down), diet and walking. Then I'd transition to jogging with some strides. In a years time you should be ready to run.... Sprints.

It's a long slow road but its possible. There are UPS and downs on the road too. My so being pregnant and now having a newborn hasn't helped. I'm shifting my work hours to avcomodate that and give my gym time in the morning.

If you want a small library on sports medicine you can borrow for free, hit me up vía PM. I will gladly loan.boojs, chat or help. I was once the dead last finisher in a race I did. I now try to encourage those people and let then know I've been there. I tell youngsters to never go there. Last race I did I was passing a 17 yr old that had given up. I told him he didn't want to start a bad health pattern now, and he picked the pace back up.

And the best thing about running or other races has to be hotties in short shorts.... Talk about motivating.

Some weight lifting and couch to 5k would be a great way to start your journey. As you progress you can try other things and see what you like. I hate workout programs like p90x. To many boot camp flashbacks. Now I will go ride bike sprints to see if I can hit the elusive 1000 watt mark..... Someday.

Before I started Insanity, I had a few aches and pains, lower back especially. Went to the chiropractor 4 times a year. Had allergies in the fall. Seemed to get colds and minor bugs easier...

Guess what...I don't experience any of that shit now. I'm not just doing this to stay in shape anymore, it's to ward off huge medical bills and the Grim Reaper.

I agree with you! I've never been bothered by more illness than in the past year. Colds, flu, you name it! I admittedly have let my fitness level take a major fall the past two years. I'm excited to have the gym littlerally right next door now! No excuses!

I've heard great things about insanity. Back at my old gym when everyone was hailing P90X, the kickboxing instructor, who travel a lot for her regular job, swore by Insanity as a way of life. I think I may need to pick up the set. I want to get back to tumbling regularly and I think that would be a great way to trim down so I can go at the mats like I used to!

I like a cardio routine like Insanity better than a body building routine... Cardio just makes you feel better all over. And you will do about 5,000 (jk) different kinds of push-ups with Insanity so it's not devoid of muscle building.

Might try the new one, T25. Shorter workout times but still intense.

So.... I got a green light from the doc. Healthy as a horse and close to the same size! Even gave me a weighted medicine ball and showed me a few exercises with it.

Now on to the nutritionist to chart out some clean eating.

Look at the Paleo diet. Its low carb and people are losing a lot of weight without the exercise. I agree 80% is diet or should i say lifestyle. Don't just do temporarily. Make it a lifestyle diet change. You will continue to lose weight. Exercise is important, so don't ignore..but focus on diet.

So, a few years ago I suffered a sports injury and after surgery and so on, I ended up heavier than I had ever been in my life.

Now, I'm down 56lbs, and my body fat % calculations went from over 40% to around 25%.

Lifestyle changes. Mainly in the diet area. First of all, I used the iphone app from myfitnesspal.com to figure out what I was actually putting into my body and to work on getting to a reasonable, steady, weight loss.

It's amazing how much calories are packed into both fast and processed foods.

I'm not a fan of this or that diet. I shoot for a balanced approach of the marco nutrients (carbs, proteins, fats) with an emphasis on fresh, non-processed foods and high quality meat choices. Most of my fats are from nuts. I have found adding a few cups of green tea and upping the calcium in my diet with non or lowfat yogurt have helped move me past a plateau.

I've resumed my sports and added more weight training to my regimen and I'm taking the excess weight off slowly, steadily and not having ups and downs.

It's a slow process, it takes time and effort and there are no easy answers.

The rewards are amazing.
