Freemont Street is pretty cool for kids. Also it's just a short drive to Hoover Dam or Grand Canyon. Guess it depends on the age of the kids.

I'm sure they'd get a kick out of the Living Statues show at the Caesars Palace Forum Shops. I did. Weather/construction pending the Mirage volcano and Treasure Island sirens show are also free.

Depending on the kids, I always liked picking up sandwiches at Subway and having a picnic in Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire, or Mt. Charleston. The tour through Hoover Dam is very interesting, but its not free. As you probably know already, there are lots of places to observe the city lights, and lots of the major casinos have outdoor light attractions. I always liked the Bellagio Fountains. If you are staying for a longer period of time and want to leave Vegas for dramatic outdoor scenery, Death Valley, the Grand Canyon, and Zion National Parks are all places you could visit and return to Vegas in the same day, but it would be a long day! Bryce Canyon NP is a little further, but well worth a visit.

The monorail is as inconvenient as they come--on purpose, courtesy the cab companies input in the design. You will have to hike to it as it runs on the back side of the casinos on the east side of The Strip. I don't recall all of the stops aside from the casinos (it omits the Wynn directly), but my recollection is being at Circus Circus you're probably closest to the north terminus which isn't really close at all. At the south terminus, which is in back of the MGM, you have to cross caticorner to the Excalibur for one that goes to the Luxor and Mandalay Bay. There is a short one between Treasure Island and the Mirage.

You would be better off buying a metro 24 hour bus pass. It runs up and down both sides of the strip and is hop on/off and gets you downtown, too.

Personally, I don't think Vegas is a place for kids. LV discovered this itself and that is why marketing is again adult oriented. A lot of the places described to go won't be inexpensive to get to absent renting a car for the time you are there. Contrary to popular belief, LV is very car friendly, they are inexpensive if there isn't a major convention(s) in town sucking up inventory, and most casinos have no cost garages on the backside with easy access as most can be found from back streets. From most garages it will still be a hike to the main floor, but not all, especially off Strip.

And when I say something is a hike tha means it's anywhere from a football field to a mile. Stuff looks close, but it isn't. The sheer size and scale of the buildings distorts the perception of distance.
