I understand where you come from. For me its different though, i have mostly long distance relationships (some might say because i am not bearable too close ) and so the internet is a relief. ANd sometimes i have days where i rather post on eccie or on facebook than going out and talk to friends because it is easier when you learn or study on the computer. Its a good distraction and offers social interaction as well. Otherwise i would feel lonely learning all day :-(

I agree with all the other points you make, i hear you and understand where you coming from. I do think though that the cyberbullying stuff, as awful as it is, has to be differed further: I think that the internet is just another method of showing disrespect. I don`t think that less disrespect would be shown without the internet. I think from my POV the problem is deeper, its more complicated than that. I think that the internet is yet another source of showing disrespect to people , POVs, whatever you don`t like. The source of that disrespect comes not from the internet its a character issue. The outcome is bad because the underlying problem of ethics (for example religions who bash gay people and schools who support such teachings or parents who are anti-gay and don`t raise their kids to respect other sexual preferences). Even in universities you have the underlying problem of sponsors (Brigham Young is a mormon university for example) and which kind of researches are condoned or supported. So - the problem lies deeper and i`d stop short of blaming the internet itself as a method that triggers such behaviour. Its within people. Its within ethics. In a world where we have cyberspace the bullying is just different that is all in my POV

The same was said about television. We as adults do not seem to think we turned out bad because of it. These kids will be just fine and we adults will learn not to take everything so personal. There will be some other technology breakthrough where the next generation is bitching about the exact same things to their kids that our our parents bitched about and presently we are bitching about.

Frank Sinatra was going to be the ruin of civil society then Elvis next the the Beatles ..............

And now Miley Cyrus aka Hannah Montana or Justin Bieber. My daughter dislikes both. She has a poster of Justin in her room, which has disparaging remarks on it and a mustache is painted on Bieber.

I absolutely agree with you (and also WTF about life evolving). The net (and other forms of technology) are just the tools used to cause the damage. That reminds me of the t-shirt slogan, "It's not guns that kill, it's people." So many people have unregulated access to the net that it sometimes feels like you have put a gun in their hands with no consequence. I guess technology is much further ahead than the law that governs it......

I see it like this.....It does so much more good than bad.

What I see is that you now , with the net, have a huge audience that you are talking to instead of say five friends in the same local. So naturally you are more likely to find an opposing view point and thus someone that is easily offended by what you have said. This can lead to some back and forth that maybe unpleasant but it is better than just talking amongist five friends that have the same world view. It is how one learns.

I find it exciting that I can watch someone in Egypt express their viewpoint towards someone in the States. It has broadened our knowledge base to the point where it is inevatible that there will be more and more heated disagreements. I think this a good thing. We will never do away with disrespectful behaviour....mainly because we will never all agree to just what constitutes disrespectful behaviour.

That is a very good thing in my book. How boring would the world be if we all agreed.

Now I know you all agree with that right?

I think its 6 of one and half a dozen of the other WTF. Does that mean I am meeting you halfway lol?
At the touch of a button I can access a library of information that I otherwise wouldn't have access too....newspapers, journals etc. The net has allowed busines to expand..on a global scale and I'm not just talking about escorts lol. However, the newspaper would read the same if I held it in my hands after buying it in print...a conversation on the net doesn't transcend those barriers without adjustment because tone doesn't transcend through silence.
Don't get me wrong, the net is brilliant for many things, but I'm not sold on it (or texting etc) being the new way to communicate in this ever evolving World...

As an aside, I never email my friends/family in England. I pick up the phone and call.
It's much more expensive, but for me it's worth the extra that I get from that communication vs net.
Even then, it can be limiting. There are times when I have had to say, "Oh that's a conversation for in person." Not because I'm procrastinating...but usually because it's a sensitive issue and requires more in person communication than anything verbal can stretch to/accomodate. I am much more willing to be open in person than I am on the phone/net even with those I know well. Being able to see how someone reacts to me in a very short space of time is incredibly important to me.....which is why I don't do a lot of email back and forth with clients either...

I agree with this. I blame ignorance, lack of education, intolerance, prejudice, and lack of good parenting, environment, superstition...anything that essentially creates "bad character" or "morally bankrupt' individuals.

The only problem with the internet is it reaches so many people in a faster amount of time. I really don't think it is as cliche' as saying "kids need to stop taking things personally", because some of the internet bullying in so many cases incites actual crime against individuals that are being targeted. Making statements that children some how need to be "mentally strong" against such attacks (bullying) is making assumptions about children in general. No two children are alike; where one child may have had the support, upbringing, education, and maturity level to deal with bullying, another may not have. Some children are more emotionally sensitive and not capable of verbalizing what is happening to them. In other words not all children having the same coping skills.

[mod hat on] Nice thread [/mod hat off], especially in light of my post on the welcome thread. Thanks all, it's nice to read. Okay, we ALL have to go get a room. In this case a really big room.

Good points, the net will never take the place of cuddling!
All it is is another form of communications, people no longer use telegraph but like you said they still do talk. All I am saying is that it is not as awful to the next generation as it is to us. They have friends all over the world now, information is moved from one kids thoughts to his friends inbox in a matter of seconds. Ours too. With that larger mixture of cultures, you get different version of just what is proper.
All I am saying is that the paradigm shift has made our civility discussion a moot point with the younger generation. They see nothing wrong with what they are doing. And frankly neither do I. They have just chosen a different path, same as we did from our elders.

But would you not agree that marriages and the family unit overall were stronger back then? I would. When there was no tv, radio, etc. people were actually forced to face things head on and communicate face to face rather than hiding behind a keyboard. You can be anyone you want to be on the internet. No one sees your flaws except when your words and immaturity shine through. They can't see how you look unless you post pictures. We are all scholars and supermodels here lol.

I actually miss "talking." Long, meaningful conversations where you actually had tears in your eyes because of the spoken words. Even if you knew you were seeing that person at school that day, you still could not bear to get off the phone so you just fell asleep listening to each other breath. I miss that.
