Default With 3 battleground states still tissues, Obama is polling over the top.... GRIP HARDER MY FRIENDS!

Electoral college poll analysis with Florida, Virgina and Colorado still considered tossups show Romneys goose is cooked!

Feel free to commence bloviating.

Actually I was wondering.... why do we even do the electoral college. They used that ONE time to get out of a tie breaker. Why the heck do we still use it? It's ridiculous. Popular vote means nothing? Why? The longer I live here, the more I wonder how are we the greatest country on earth when we are soooooooo backwards with such important stuff....

It was put in place in a different time with different constraints. While it may be outdated it requires a constitutional amendment to fix it and it is not worth the effort to change. With rare exceptions the popular vote and electoral college vote end up the same. I still believe that will also happen this time.

Would have been nice if there had been no electoral college when Al won the popular vote

The EC should be reformed from "winner takes all " to a proportioned allocation based on House of Representative districts.

It's the last remnant of the Republic since the 17the amendment crippled it. Pure democracy has a much shorter lifespan than a Republic historically, once people find out they can get free stuff by voting for it, it's over. There were three parties to the contract that is the Constitution, the people, the states, and the federal government. Stripping away even more power from the states leaves the people standing alone against the federal government, not a good situation.

If not for the electoral college the politicians wouldn't give a flying fuck what anyone more than 300 miles from a coast thought. The major cities would rule the country unfettered and those stuck in "flyover country" would be less than second class citizens.

Exclamation Wisdom

Even more than 200 years later, the wisdom of the founding fathers still shines.

These men understood human nature and guarded against its weaknesses by putting provisions in place to protect the country.

. . . It seems I read somewhere about how the electoral college was put in place to guard the country against "the howling masses".

+1

The same can be said of the Senate. The fact that even the least populous states still have two Senators somewhat tempers the propensity of our "political elites" to tell everybody in states like Kansas and Oklahoma to go fuck themselves -- although as Iaintliein noted, the Seventeenth Amendmant weakens that dynamic.

1913 was the year freedom died. Not only was the 17th amendment adopted, the federal income tax was adopted in the 16th amendment, and the Federal Reserve was created. It was a disastrous year for lovers of freedom.
