Since you’s from Texas there’s “only two things come from Texas . . .”

Steers and queers. I saw the movie, and had a great laugh at that line. It was the same line I heard in the USMC boot camp. The DIs just wanted to harass everyone to see if you could keep a clear head under stress. They had files on everyone, and read all of the personal information on each guy and tried and firgure out how to rattle our cage.

The one thing that really got me rattled was when we crawled under barbed wire with locked in M60 machine guns firing live rounds over our butts. I had my head and my butt flat on the ground, like everyone else. Suddenly the firing stopped with us about half way through the course. The Major ran out along the side and started shooting an AK47 like Clint Eastwood did in a movie about a Marine gunnery Sargent. I still don't know if he was shooting live rounds, or blanks.

The lesson, keep your eyes open and observe everything instead of just keeping low. I thought I was going to crap my pants; I think some of the guys did.

Last year there was a discussion in Congress about including all 18 year old girls, like the guys, to register for the draft in case of another war: It never made it out of committee.

I have heard the saying for years that women will only be equal to men when they are included in the draft registration and taken into war in the same numbers of men.

It will never happen ladies!

The point of all of the training was to make us think under stress. To this day, I find that I observe more about the things around me than a person who was never in the military. I got drafted at a time when almost every guy my age was getting drafted;. and wound up spending almost 3 years in the service.

By the way: here is an interesting observation: Deaths by US military during WW I was about 50,000. Deaths by the US Military during Viet Nam was about 58,000.

JR, thanks for your service! Are those stats enemy deaths or all, including "collateral damage"? Sounds low especially for Nam? Seems the reported "body counts" would be a much higher number?

53k but you’re not considering the length of time of US involvement in each! About 1 year compared to 20!

Might be getting a tad off topic here!!
