Is this a new thing?

So it's been a few years, but I decided to pop in again and I've noticed something that I have not seen before. A couple of times already, I've gotten a request for $$ as a form of vetting. One time, my CC company flagged the charge as questionable and the second time the provider just disappeared after saying yes but never getting her 'sign up' information.

So is this a real thing, or is this a new scam and just run?

I wasn't objecting, but when your CC company flags the charge and won't pay it, you start to wonder. Also when the provider asks you what city you are in, it's a little odd since my assumption is that you know what city you posted an ad in.

I have not been around for about 7 years, and I've only been back for about a week, but everyone seems a little skittish these days. It's too bad.

When someone wants a deposit or $ for vetting or whatever upfront, move on to someone else.
